July Hatch-A-Long

I candled my eggs last night. Most of them looked great! I pulled 5 eggs out of the 40 that I set. 2 were BLRW eggs, 2 were mixed breed eggs that I bought for fun, and 1 from my flock. My olive eggers all looked good, though the eggs were very hard to candle. I'm excited for those! I've been wanting some for awhile. I have a couple more eggs that I was unsure of and will have to candle those again in a few days. A few of my girls just started laying and I added a few of their eggs to the incubator to check fertility. Sure, I could've just cracked one open, but what's the fun in that? It's too early to be sure, but it looks like the eggs from the one pullet might be fertile.

Sorry about those eggs that you lost but congrats on the new hen that's laying. One of my hens also started laying now!!!!

Thanks! I always figure that not all my eggs will make it. It's not the end of the world. If they all hatched, I would have some space issues. I actually have 2 new layers. They started on the same day which was a nice little coincidence.. and they've been laying almost every day. I hatched one of them in January. Her hatch mates were cockerels so I bought the other in april. She was "about 3 months old" then, according to the guy I got her from. I have one other that I got at the same time. I am hoping to see eggs from her soon. I have about 9 more pullets that I hatched at the beginning of march. I'm hoping to get eggs from them in another month or so. Then, I'll finally have a good layer flock again! Congrats on your new layer as well! Do you have others that you think will start laying soon?

Yes. I have 15 more left. The hen that started laying now was for some funny reason the youngest of them all!:ya

Hello!
I just candled the 24 eggs again. One of the Bantams was completely clear and one of the farm chicken eggs had The Red Ring, so I took them out and opened them. Luckely I was not mistaken, nothing really had happened as I suspected a couple of days ago.
The other 22 however are full of life and even starting to fill up, so I'm really excited.
I just don't understand how come time flies and waiting for hatching takes ages.

I've started collecting the eggs for my July hatch, I'm suprised I can tell the BA from the rest of the eggs, but they are a lot smaller than I expected, almost like bantam eggs, but I thought they were standards, the hens are only a little bit smaller than my current hens.
