July Hatch-A-Long

Day 15/16 and I just finished candling all the eggs, I pulled 6 clear/early quitters, only one of the 9 left are iffy, I took a look at my lighter eggs to see how full they were, from both ends, and used that as a measure of the dark eggs, only one of the ones I pulled was pulled due to this, and was an early quitter, the other eggs are at least 1/2 full with one of the 2 silkie eggs nearly full. I may end up with a hatch staggered across a few days, but I don't mind to much. Lock down in 2 more nights. Ack, I lost 2 due to malpositions last month, they never made it to pip, as they were in the wrong end, when I opened the eggs the veins were gone, yolk mostly absorbed, and beak no where near the side of the egg.

Day 20. 1 out. 1 zippering. 3 pips on the last hatch of 2014.

Oh, no...Sweetie, I'm so sorry! When did that happen? Are the other chicks okay? Murderous as they are, anyway.

Me too!!! The breeder even called to congratulate me, he said that even a 66% hatch rate is **** good fro his calls, especially when they're being hatched by a novice. Made me feel pretty good. <3

Out of the 12 Salmon Faverolle eggs I had shipped to me, 7 are developing. I'm on day 12 and I pulled 5 clears last night. I saw movement in all 7.

I also decided to stick 2 of my own chicken's eggs in the incubator 3 days ago. They would be a barred rock/australorp mix. I did it on a whim because my 6 year old and I decided we'd like to experience hatching chicks from our own chickens.

Had a temperature spike last night and it was my fault. Thermostat probe fell to the floor and got covered while I was turning eggs, came back ~5 hours later to turn them again and the temperature at the top of the incubator was all the way up to 115. Some of the eggs were not as hot as the others so I am hoping I can get something from them. I'll candle in a few days to see if any are still viable. In the meantime I will stop putting eggs in the refrigerator and hold them for possible incubation.
