July Hatch-A-Long

Had a temperature spike last night and it was my fault. Thermostat probe fell to the floor and got covered while I was turning eggs, came back ~5 hours later to turn them again and the temperature at the top of the incubator was all the way up to 115. Some of the eggs were not as hot as the others so I am hoping I can get something from them. I'll candle in a few days to see if any are still viable. In the meantime I will stop putting eggs in the refrigerator and hold them for possible incubation.

Bummer on the temp spike! That sucks, but I am glad you have more eggs to work with!

So I candled my test Serama eggs last night and I was hopeful that my little white hen Anna's eggs would be fertile, they look pretty darn clear : ( The roo has tried to mate with her a few times but was obviously unsuccessful. I am not super surprised because they have not been together much because the frizzle hen that is in with the roo isn't nice to Anna at all so I keep them separated. I still have 7 frizzle eggs that are on day 5/4!

Bummer, mine spiked to 107, just due to the weather. :(

I put my remaining 24 button eggs into lockdown yesterday. Last time I had a poor hatch, due to low temps, but hopefully it'll go good this time. I'm not expecting all to hatch of course, these are shipped eggs after all.
Last time I got one chick out of fifteen eggs, but I've hopefully fixed the problem this time. My one chick is quite friendly, and seems to be alright, but the first week was lonely for her.
I also have a chicken egg in there that is probably hatching the day after the buttons. There's two other chicken eggs as well, but they're only on day three.

Can some one please help me, it's day 18 and the only egg I have left under my broody seems to have pipped. It looks like a pip not just a crack it's a perfect circle with hairline cracks. When I candled I found it and the chick didn't seem to move at all. Could it just be resting after pipping, I really hope so, or is it dead:( ? Please help!

If it pipped, that is good news and most likely it will rest and then unzip the shell. Give it some time.. they can take 12 or more hours to hatch after pip so it might be out tomorrow! They have to finish absorbing yolk and blood and that takes time. You want them to be ready to come out when they do. I'm excited for your little chick!

You don't have to be rude about it. :/ I've literally spent the past hour bawling. I just can't handle losing another batch of eggs after what happened last year.
Be rude about it??? Seriously?? You are on a site asking for advice from strangers based on their experiences! That's ridiculous! All I said was "I had 2 sets of duck eggs (4 total) that I had a really bad experience with! I've hatched 100s of Chicken, Quail, Turkey, & Peafowl eggs with about a 90-95% hatch rate, but the 4 duck eggs I tried, I failed miserably at! They all developed but none hatched!" Again that's just MY experience & obviously other people do well with duck eggs! Maybe I got bad eggs? Who knows, lots of different variables play a roll in hatching eggs! But you've lost your mind if you think I was being rude in anyway! What I said was a fact! Ill tell you whats rude when someone reposts something u write & says "and the calm is gone again" Saying thanks to me! I'm sorry but if a simple "well the truth is the truth" bothers you that bad then you probably shouldn't be asking for advice from complete strangers on a public site! Your not gonna like every answer you get, I promise! Everything with hatching eggs isn't always sunshine and rainbows! There's a lot of sadness and death! There's also a wonderful sense of accomplishment and joy! If you cried at all from me saying well the truth is the truth me meaning --let me translate-- *well thats rude that u reposted & said that but regardless of if you liked what happened with my eggs or not (I know I didn't) I can't change it! Its what happened" I could've replied with 1000 other rude comments but I decided to be nice & simply say what I said! Its a fact! Maybe hatching eggs just isn't for you! This is not for the faint of heart! Many chicks die for no apparent reason! You can't be sensitive! Especially when YOU ask for advice & want to know what others experiences are with duck eggs?!?! I wouldn't be so upset over this but all day on BYC all I've seen is people fighting and name calling! It really is sad! We're all adults! Why create drama out of nothing?? I'm on this site because of my love for poultry and because I want to learn all I can! I'm 24 and want to pass this newly found hobby of mine on to my boys one day! This makes me not wanna ask for help when I need it! Arguing period especially unrelated to chickens is not beneficial to anyone! Im normally a very positive/happy person! I shouldn't have even replied to this! All it does is take up precious space/time on these potentially life saving poultry threads! When someone has an emergency and is in a hurry researching trying to find answers to questions to save their birds life the last thing they wanna read is ppl arguing for pages and pages about nothing! Sorry Rant over!

Well I lost one today, and it wasnt even one with a particularly bad air cell. So 10 ducklings, 4 mystery chicks and a lot of random ones!

It seems like you are about a week behind on this thread and so maybe you were not in touch with the tone of the thread at the time, but when someone is really worried about their ducks and some of us are trying to be supportive and you chime in just to mention how your ducks all died... well, your timing wasn't great and it felt quite insensitive at the time. I am sure you can imagine how that might have upset someone, even if that was not your intention. None of us is perfect, and maybe just acknowledging the misunderstanding is more helpful than blaming someone for being upset.
