I just call them "Browns" - hubby knows what I mean.

Chukars are great birds! Never ate any but raised them. And at the time got too attached to them to eat them lol. I had no luck with my valley quail and a warning: Avoid Dumor 24% quail starter. I'm not sure if it was a bad batch or just too much protein for quail chicks but after a few days of use my chicks started dying. And Saturday I found 20 dead and took them off the 24% and put them on 20% and saw immediate results. I have yet to have anymore deaths now I got them off the quail starter.

8-10 oz? Is that live or dressed weight? Some jumbos can get 16-20 oz dressed weight.

Yeah, I lost all my cali valley and 20 of my corturnix and I was scared I would lose them all but soon as I got them off the starter things turned around. Luckily I have 60 left more than enough to sale some to make up for the losses. And still have enough to breed for the colors I want. I just feel I let the ones that died down.

As far as pronouncing when I looked about most sites have it being pronounced as: ku-tûr'niks after the males call.

That's all I can find here, too.
I hear they like meal-worms, though, so I may treat them with that soon as I can find them.

I call them "quail" most of the time too, but "Japanese" would be easy too. I've always said "Co-turn-icks" just because I have never spoke to someone about them, I've always read it. LOL As long as we all know what we're talking about the same thing, we're all good.

I have mine on Gamebird Starter which is 30%. Just because we feed our turkeys the same stuff. It is only a dollar more at a local feedstore, than the chick-starter at TSC. We don't have too much variety on food around here.
