Oh, never fear, I'm sure I have dozens of things that will work. I just knew I should have bought that though.

HA HA. Actually, they had two. A small one & a bigger one that would also work for lizards. I almost bought it in case I ever had to isolate a chick, but then again, the two empty aquariums in the basement work for that, too.

I just like to buy animal cages.

Gives me an excuse to fill them up. Hmmm. Currently I have 8 empty quail cages, an empty small animal cage (to small for a rabbit, dunno what it was made for), an empty BIG dog crate (plastic type) that is missing its door, and an empty medium dog kennel (wire, missing its tray). 2 empty aquariums, my two compartment spare brooder is empty, and I have a super small bird cage empty, too. (I use that, though, to put button quail into temporarily while cleaning their cages. Works great.)

Hmm. Maybe I need more critters?

This one is a smidge under 13oz

I put a picture of her in the cutest gamebird contest.

Do we get any extra points for a really annoyed look on their face?

Oh no!!!! There she goes with the scales AGAIN!

Now put 150 birds on that same scale, average the weigh, and you should come up with a figure. A figure well under 12 oz. Once you do that, you are a breeder. Yes, I have some big fat birds, I call breeders. I can also take some of those and subject them to what I call abuse, to make them weigh more. Put them on a scale, and show a monster bird. For what? I ask.

People who raise/breed coturnix usually do it for a reason. Meat/egg production/pets/etc... The people who really care, will take a step back...analyze all the aspect of a potential clients need and suggest a particular strain that will meet their needs. Not strut out a big fat bird, just to make a sale. Is it really worth $8.00? There are hidden up sides and down sides to particular models based on strain, and if I don't happen to have that strain, I forward them to other folks that can meet their needs, and I would like to anonymously thank someone for their referral to me. Thanks JJ...oops!

When I see 150 different 16 oz. moby quail on a scale, then I will not only eat my own words, I will also stand in line, and pay bank, to get some of those eggs. Just because you are new to coturnix, doesn't mean that you don't know what you are talking about, but I tend to listen to people who have some more time in the trenches, and also throw my own 3 years of practical experience into the mix. Reading 40 year old university papers is a must, but I think practical experience trumps book learning, and misguided theory...in most cases.
That is just me...my opinion.

Yes! That would be a good thing, so we can separate big monster birds from production weight birds. Everyone with a monster bird can dote about it there, and people that want advice about going from one strain to another can be dealt with on an individual basis.

That's a good idea! A "Show me your big fat bird" sticky would be great. I'm not being sarcastic. I really mean it.
