June 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Very cute, and the rooster is gorgeous! But did you really hatch only two female chick out of nine? Yikes!

It must be the year of the rooster. I had 8 shipped eggs, 3 ended up hatching and all 3 were boys. I bought 3 straight run chicks a week or two later and only 1 pullet was in that bunch. Gah!

Definitely the year of the rooster! My friend bought 14 sexed chickens, told they were all females...not so much :/ 4 of them are roosters and one is a meat bird *eye roll* I told her to go talk to them (local farm store) and ask for the extra money she paid for sexed birds back. Do you think they will do that?

Well there usually is a loophole in their sexing guarantee. They may be able to get back some money but I doubt much.

In other news, we were FINALLY able to separate the last broody from the two mamas and two chicks. Today is day 21 for 2 of the eggs she's on, praying for at least one healthy chick for her because she's basically adopted the other two chicks and was a little wound up that she couldn't get to them through the divider :( But she settled down after I distracted her with a couple bites of bread and then she went over to her eggs and gathered them all up and is sitting peacefully now :) She watches the chicks, but stays on the nest so hopefully the hatching will be okay now and she's not bothered by the other two trying to "help" her hatch her eggs LOL She really is a peach and I could tell she was getting annoyed at the other two hens trying to wiggle onto her eggs, but she never pecked, she's a darlin :D But I didn't want things to escalate more once the chicks hatch?? It seems like as the week has progressed she's gotten more agitated at those two hens, so now was the time to divide them up.
If you are the praying kind, please pray she hatches at least one healthy chick SOON, the more the better, but at this point with as much as she's moved them around and we've moved the others out etc I'll be thrilled with one <3

Yeah I wondered about that :/ Figured there might be something in the fine print. I guess the one positive is that one of the roosters is a beautiful Leghorn! Wow!

Where did the farm store get the chicks? A lot of people think they can feather sex chicks not understanding that feather sexing is a sexlink trait--you have to cross breeds to get it to work. Hatcheries use vent sexing and are very good at it.

My guess is that the farm store got the chicks from a local breeder and they are fooling themselves into thinking they can tell gender at hatch by feather sexing.

some roosters are absolutely beautiful. It's pretty hard to do 100% vent sexing. Usually a few roosters slip through. Average is like 3-5%.

I think you're exactly right, they told her something about the bump on the back of the legs=rooster ??? I was like ummm, oooookay, she thought the same thing, but gave them the benefit of the doubt :/
