Here in NS, the first warm nights of summer bring a veritable feast for anything that eats insects. Its a barrage of huge, stupid, slow beetles. I've always collected a few for my tarantulas, but since I have chickens this year, I just flick a light on every night and get a plastic laundry puck container. Then I can pluck them from the screen door and the ground under the light at my leisure. The birds go crazy for these bugs, and they're so meaty. I think I collected more the 50 June bugs last night, and free protein packed feed that gets them running is worth the collecting, if you ask me. Pop a paper towel in there and they live for quite a while.

I provided a bunch of grit, though, because those wing covers are pretty tough. They crunch loudly when you step on them. I am wondering, though, should I cut back on the FF while I'm feeding the JBs? The birds seem to just stuff themselves until there is no food left, no matter how distended their crops get.

Mine go crazy for those June Bugs as well

Good source of protein, though these bugs disgust me.. They are all over the deck in the morning, and all cleaned up by 10 am at the latest.
