Thanks everyone for joining in! Looking forward to you sharing your hatches with all of us.

I promissed to start a HATCH-A-LONG every month this year, with the new month in front of the thread name.

It's raining like crazy here in Oregon today. I just got off from work & am on my home office computer, looking out my side window at a bunch of soaked chickens from my flock. I still remember the day when they would run for cover from rain, like the sky ways falling. Am adding a note on (see post #1) *Feeding your breeding flock for fertility, that's where a healthy egg starts.

Well, it's back to 'MAY HATCH-A-LONG come join in' as I just did lockdown on my 4 Bantam BS/S Faverolles eggs, due to hatch on the 28th.

Dunno if I'm allowed to join, but I have 14 goose eggs in the incubator set to hatch on June 20th. I set them on Sunday and the incubator is in mini-lock down until I have to start misting them. I am itching to candle and see what's in those eggs.. But I have no excuse to open because my 'bator is a lovely Brinsea octagon and I just turn the whole incubator to turn the eggs.

Well I'm bummed. Looks like that of the 11 BO eggs I put in only 3 are still trying to be big kids. Last night was day 10 so it's pretty obvious. This was my first hatch and the first set of eggs collected since my girls were put with James. They are about 11 months old and one of them I think just started laying the week I got them (2weeks ago). So maybe it just was a little early? We'll see how they do. In he mean time I'll have a dozen+ more. BOs and 6ish banty Sal favs ready to go in hopefully today or tomorrow when the BSF eggs get here!

Ok, I'm in too. I am new to chickens and incubating so if I get any I will consider it a huge success. My eggs just arrived in the mail this morning and they are "resting" until this evening when I put them in the incubator. I think that gives me a June 16-17 hatch day depending on what we call Day 1 (think tomorrow evening will be Day 1). I have 11 black copper marans and 8 barred rocks. So very excited!


How do I know if my "air cells" survived the shipping. I have been reading about it and I candled all of them and I just can't really tell. I don't see the obvious bright air cell that I have seen in other pictures but they are all on Day 7 or so. Does that mean they are all scrambled?

I am in too. I have 15 silkie eggs under my GLW. They are due to hatch 6/10. This is her first time being broody and she is doing great!

One of my B.O.s just went broody and boy is she letting everyone know it. You should see her boss everyone out of the nest box and surrounding areas. The poor other girls don't know what to do or where to lay - so they are laying on the hay bales, on the floor, behind a crate/pen. LOL what a nut this girl is!!! I think tonight I will move her to the dog crate so I can feed/water her and shut the door. Then she can sit in peace and everyone else can get back to 'normal'. Crazy hen. She better hatch something if she is that bossy about it!! LOL

I set 18 Cuckoo Maran eggs. They are set to hatch June 13th. Im sooo EXCITED! This is my first hatch so I am hoping it goes well.

Also, I candle them as soon possible in a dark closet or bathroom, to see the early stages of an air cell (It's sometimes very small), shine a small intense flashlight right up against the wide end of the egg laying sideways. Holding the egg still in one hand & moving the flashlight around at different angles near the end, look for an air spot;or rotate the egg against the flashlight till you see it. If there is a bubble like circle that rolls around to different areas when the egg is tipped or turned, then that is a loose air cell; sometimes with real scrambled ones there can be 2 or 3 air cell bubbles moving around. I mark those with a small circle on the top of the wide end, to remind me that it may still be damaged at hatching time (to learn from). I understand that they can still hatch if the air cell is in the right position for the chick to pip the membrane inside the egg for the 1st air; this is where setting the eggs in an egg carton comes in xtra handy to keep the air pocket at the top for the chick. I have 1 egg that had a loose air cell or 2 & have my fingers crossed that it will do well; I saw movement at lockdown, so it has a good chance. Hope this answers!
