June Hatch A Long

Yea, that would be nice if i had a bird like that orp!

She hatched pair of CCLBs, and was really really rough and mean with them, so I moved them to another momma. They are now in the brooder, along with a LO that hatched under that same momma.
Huh, just not a good mom, huh? Was this her first time?

Poor Susan and babies had a stressful evening! I noticed during the day that a couple of chicks plus Susan have the runs. Common in shipped chicks, where pasty butt needs to be watched for. Susan ate so little while she was broody, and is now making up for lost time by eating and eating and eating! So, I guess that sudden change gave her diarrhea too. So, after dark we grabbed Susan and took her inside for a butt bath, which she’s had several time before (al that fluff!). She was calm at first, then must have really woken up and totally panicked - poor girl! Meanwhile, I went through the chicks and decided that one was we just stained but the other needed a bath too. They seemed ok when all was said and done - sure hope I didn’t chill that chick! I had taken them off of electrolytes/ probiotics yesterday, so it’s back on for them!

Are you giving medicated chick starter to them because it's my understanding that can be too much medicine for the broody because of the quantity they eat. May be why she has an upset tummy?

Unmedicated starter! Several chicks had a little staining around the vent when they arrived. It’s my understanding that digestive problems are common in shipped chicks due to the stress of transit...

Are they eating anything other than chicken feed? Fruit or veggie treats often cause the runs. I no longer give baby chicks any treats.

Probably! :) I was just wondering about Susan doing it to so thought maybe it was medicated because I had heard about it being an issue.

While our other new chicks are eating all sorts of stuff that Mom finds for them, :eek:Susan is I the brooder box, on new shavings, with only chick starter and whatever liquids I’m giving them. I have fresh water always, but for the first few days I also have electrolytes/probiotics/ Nutridrench. I stopped those Saturday and noticed some past butt Sunday so I’ve reatarted the electrolytes/probiotics...

I'm sure they will be ok! My broody chicks always get all sorts of interesting tid bits that the hens find and since my hens are with the rest of the flock that also means whatever scraps I give them and they seem to be perfectly happy! I have several healthy teenager chickens that are happy healthy birds that were raised that way. :D
It's funny because I'm always cautious about what I offer my brooder babies too. The only treat I offer them is scrambled eggs but the little ones with broody hens outside get everything from watermelon, kale, bugs, grass, and who knows what else and everyone seems perfectly happy, lol. :idunno
