June Hatch A Long

Well we still aren’t 100% certain about their genders... I’m an optimist, but after a week of trying to run my incubator and heat plates off my limited solar, with no clear candling results, I opened them up and saw no signs of fertility.

I'm not sure if it's typical for geese or my friend's gander is a slacker but out of 13 goose eggs she gave me only 5 were fertilized. I don't have any idea how she knows which is which either though. lol

They're Toulouse/Crested/Chinese mixes. Hatching them for a friend...or that's the plan...I mean, how am I supposed to give up something that looks at me like this?! lol

Love it what light are you using that is a great view!!

I use this corded light. It’s amazing for not taking the eggs out of the incubator. It’s got several tops so you can focus the light or have it more broad. With the smaller top on, I can see air cells without opening the lid. It’s 15.00 on Amazon, and I feel like the corded lights are brighter than battery. This is fairly universal with lighting, I do commercial photography and it’s always that way.

I also use this. It’s got a base. I lost the adapters to widen the light so it just provides additional support but doesn’t work as well on its own later in the hatch as the magic fly one does on its own. It really helps though to provide supplementary light to dark eggs and bigger embryos later in the hatch.

I read they maintain their human imprint even once they imprint on their hatchmates. Ducks imprint on a species within 3 hours, and geese imprint on like the first moving object they see I think....

8 days! We are only 8 days out! C’mon Broody gals, hang on a little longer! Naruto, our broody alpha hen, jumped up on the roost last night after taking a nest break! I was like “uh, no. Get your feathery rear back onto that nest!!!”

How exciting!

I’ve read that before and thought it really interesting. We were the only big thing that our ducklings saw, but they definitely don’t see us as “Mom”. It’s more like we are “food dispenser” as well as “OMG! That human is trying to touch us! It’s finally going to eat us! RUN!!!” One ducking even hatched late and alone, was kept alone for awhile to treat spraddle leg along with plenty of cuddles, was then brooded with sibling ducks, and after a few weeks, had the same OMG attitude as them. I think that there must be more to it than just what the duckling sees. I’ve wondered if maybe the duckling needs to follow the large object to imprint?
