June Hatch A Long

So at Dawn, I just sat outside the pen and listened, not wanting to interrupt important bonding time. I only heard soft contented cheeps and a mama’s soft cluck cluck cluck so was going to leave it at that, but DD had to peek before leaving for camp: Susan sitting on the nest hiding her babies. I came back a little later to check on things. All my worry was for naught! Not only are Susan and babies thrilled with each other, but Susan must have heard that they were hungry, because the new family had relocated within the nesting pen to the feeder. Susan decided that her time of fasting is done, and she’s chowing down next to her chicks. I brought the Nutridrench browned waterer and Susan was fine with me messing with her space; the babies ran over to my fingers after our little bonding time this morning. So stinking cute!!! I’m so glad that we didn’t try again to break her when the hatch failed!:love:wee:celebrate

:celebrate Yaaaay!!! I'm so happy for you, your daughter, and Susan! :love They're precious!

Thank you so much! I am so very relieved and so thrilled to see them all looking contented! A few chicks are pretty sleepy still, but hopefully they’ll recover from their journey soon. We’ve had Ameraucana chicks before, so I wasn’t surprised at their chubby cheeked cuteness, but those Fauvorelles!!! OMG cuteness overload with the chubby cheeks and rounded little bodies!!!

I don’t think that DD knows yet, though I texted her pics. She is in architecture camp, as she’s interested in civil or architectural engineering. She says that so far, architecture camp is driving her towards civil... :gig At the orientation yesterday, the professor forcefully told us and the kids that he despises their phones, so if he saw a phone anywhere, he would smash it with a hammer! Meanwhile, I was trying to squeeze my sick cat into a specialist’s appointment at our vet school. Ya know, avoiding the front desk (2 weeks for an appointment!) and calling in favors to get my cat seen sooner... So I had to keep ducking into empty hallways to return calls so my phone wasn’t made an example of! Other parents were doing the same - we are at least as bad as our kids! Lol.

Thank you, I am so thrilled with the chicks!!! I tried to get a pic of Naruto and her chicks but she is still hiding them in the coop and takes them to the most inaccessible corners when I show up. This pic is the closest that the chicks have gotten to leaving the coop.... I’ve only now compared both, brooding in a separate pen vs brooding in the coop, and I really like the separate pen for broodies and mom, as the moms seem so much more relaxed. Here are two of 9 Balls chicks, 6 weeks old, looking in on Susan and her new chicks. Susan knows that they can’t get to her babies and was undisturbed. I thought that Naruto could handle the flock access since she is the flock’s alpha hen, but even so she is nervous. I’m afraid her chicks are going to see the world as a scary place...

Most of my mammals were my former research animals, and my cat was in a diabetes study but has been a diabetic in remission for 6 years! It’s a long time for a diabetic cat. I hope that we are able to find something treatable...
