June Hatch a Long

I guess if you leave them in standing up they can zipper around the sides, lift the top off with their widdo wings and just step out. LOL!!  Let me know if that happens. Til then mine are on their sides. :drool

Close! Mine sort of wear the egg cap as a hat for a while and use their widdo wings to pull themselves up before hopping out.

Joining the June hatch-a-long! I have 12 barnyard mix with a few Bantys. I am new to hatching. This is my third attempt. The first time I had 18 eggs, didn't candle, dry incubator - borrowed. Only one chick hatched. April 1st. Second attempt 10 mixed eggs in. Two hatched, one with a problem with yoke not quite absorbed, but doing fine now 2 weeks later. Set my third - and last - hatch attempt on May 15th -

Changed location of the incubator, bought 2 more thermometers (I think the one that came with the incubator is broke! The temp fluctuates all the time and doesn't stay matched up with the 2 I just bought) Thinking this may be one of the reasons for failed hatches. Whatever happens this time is what I'll go with for the summer. I have 4 chicks now, a newly built coop, ready to add to the chick fam!

I'm a city girl living in the country - I don't know much about chickens! I've learned so much from this site and am grateful for it's existence.
My husband and family think I'm nuts. Sounds like from others on this site that that is the norm. Happy to be here.

Yipeeeee another crazy chicken lady in the making!! Something else you can think about. Those incubators need to be steralized after each use. The styrofoam will hold bacteria that will get in the egg and kill the embryo. If this is not a good hatch, I would clean and give it one more try. Diluted bleach, rinse very very good, air dry in the sun. Or use Oxine.

Hi everyone, I'm Amber! I'm a newbie and just set 12 BO and 12 Golden Comets this morning!! June cannot come quick enough!! I have a question for you all, I just turned my eggs for the last time today and noticed a dent coming out of one of my comet eggs. It has no foul odor from what I could tell so far. I candled it quick and saw this. It seems like the hen might have scratched it or it may just be a misshaped egg. Here's how it looks candled.

Is that 1 of your eggs Amber or from someone elses birds? Some hens will lay eggs that are almost always "abnormal" I had a production red that layed supper jumbo with a thircker ring around the center every day. I culled her though she had a bad case of vent gleek and was starting to go down I think. But I've had lots of hens that didn't lay perfect eggs. Perfect enough for me and mine but not what people would consider grage A.
If it don't smell or have very dark insides I would wait until you can candle and see if theres developement. I still

haven't had a popper in any hatches myself but some people get 1 and are super paranoid after that. Personally I would wait and see if theres any change before making any decisions. But I have never been a cull freak. But that sometimes (Almost always) get me into trouble with what I want to do verses what I am doing.

I had to take a peek at my eggs last day or 2 with candleing. Guineas I was afraid were frozen have developement in some of those I candled. And at least some of my shipped Leghorn eggs have devopement, even a little early on my candleing, just set those Sat morning. These shipped eggs I was disapointed in but might turn out. Will wait til saturday to do a more offical candle. Since only the leghorns aren't a challenge for my eyes anymore.

And now I have 5 rouen eggs and 1 dz guinea eggs waiting for a few more of them to load up some bator space. I am attempting staggered hatches but not daily hatches... yet. Rather have 1 bunch in 2-3 days rather than 2-3 a day.
And yes May is way too long even though I have a batch due around 30th, June is ATM the motherload of my hatching if they continue to do ok. And the duck and guineas stay cooperative. I won't say how many I have set but its triple didgets for me now and still getting guinea/duck eggs til prolly Fri.
I have the option to trade my guinea eggs for chicken eggs but the eggs would be from a mix and match flock and I am hoping to get some pure breeds to add/continue with what I have ideas for. I took some time and money this year to make seperate breeding pens for different birds and more BYM right now would make it a real fiascal trying remember what is who and where.

Ohhh sounds great, it'll be my lucky chick if it hatches! I got these from someone local, she took them right out of the coop for me- paid $7 for the dozen. ! I let them settle for 24 hours and then put them in. Quite a few of them look abnormally large and some look too small but ill be happy if i get at least 50%.
The other dozen are BO that were given to me at work- the guy raising them told me they had just been laid and should be fertile- they were supposed to be for eating and they have less of a chance because i wasnt 100% that i would incubate them, then i decided i would. They were left in my car for a few days, of course i cracked the window and rotated them, but hey, ill be surprised and thrilled if they hatch!
