June Hatch-A-Long

How can you tell if they have pipped internally? I'm still new at this and I have 17 eggs left to hatch and I have heard at least 1 peep from an egg. Also does it take longer for Maran eggs. I thought that I heard it did because their membrane is tougher.Just wondering.

These are my first two to hatch from this weeks hatchings. They are suppose to be black polish, not exactly sure about that one one the left. It sure is pretty coloring though. But I think it is going to have splayed leg. When should I start to treat that?
such cute babies!! Bet they are even cuter once fully fluffed. I thought I had read that plain newspaper could contribute to let problems in newly hatched chicks... Would it be better to use paper towels?

Lots of babies coming about. I had said I wouldn't candle my current eggs until friday, but I don't think I can wait that long. Lol

I think u can candle and see internal pip but if u hear chirping then that one has.

Is it normal for one to external pip and then nothing for 6+ hrs?

Agreed! Super cute coloring. Get a textured surface under the chicks. Helps to prevent spayed legs.

I use puppy training/piddle pads in my brooder. Non slip, and absorbent, they work really well.

Yes! Newspaper and such are "slippery" for chicks. Can cause splayed legs and other leg issues. Use something with traction for them. Even a towel over the paper is better.
:thumbsup
