June Hatch-A-Long

I love experiments! I did one last year when I had some shipped eggs arrive very dirty. I decided to expiriment and see if washing them had any effect. Some I left plain, and the others were washed in different solutions. Bleach, vinager, soapy water ect. I had a few hatch in every set, so I concluded that it didn't matter much if you choose to wash your eggs or not before hatching, though, I bet it keeps the bacteria out if you just set clean eggs.

I have set some porous eggs from some of my own hens on occasion. I don't think I have ever had more problems with the porous ones, but I do keep my nests pretty clean to begin with and the eggs from my ladies are rarely dirty. I would think that if you eat a clean porous egg it would likely hatch, but maybe not if it were a dirty one. Good luck!

On a side note, I candled the guinea eggs today and pulled out 3 that were very clear. The others I am not positive on, but looked to have some veining happening in them. I didn't bother to check that Marans tonight, and will be heading down to fill the empty incubator spots with my SBELs.
Log thanks to you and Miss we can rule out some standing rules!!
One less thing to worry about.
Miss i would think the porous might be from diet. Maybe they need more protein? or something My eggs though some are smooth as glass others not shiny but chalky porous and the inbwetween regualr eggs...and all of them get the same food. Layer feed scratch and crimped corn free range too and some junk leftovers now and then..usually white or rye bread and strawberry tops..... old pasta. this and that im throwing out if it isnt moldy.

Im hatching out Lemon cuckoo Orps at least i hope i am plus a few of my own Lavender Orps although 4 of my LOs eggs were infertile or not good The cuckoos are shipped but most seem be growing.
Think i said i am weighing ..see how that goes.
Right now looking at my air cells and weights They look too small and my weights were a little over last time so im not putting in any water .Im on day 14.. and running 22-38% humidity Temp 99.5 stable.
Due June 2nd.Fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed here for you for a successful Lemon Cuckoo Orp hatch! This is the first I've heard of that variety of Orp, so I had to look them up....they're Gorgeous!

Ahh, hatching addiction, I see. I wish you were closer because you could hatch them and then turn them loose at my place. I'm in it for the birds. Lol I'm not really a fan of hatching. I would rather be able to just have 20 magically appear every 3 weeks. You use both incubators and I'll take the chickens. Lol. Then we will both be set

Started saving BSL eggs again. Going to try for a weeks worth all set and see how many I can get going. Other eggs still going good, even the Rouen batch that was set 3+ weeks after Drake was absent. Now have a BO looking to go broody on the probably infertile eggs the duck is laying.

Have a couple more projects I am waiting to start setting for so old sperm can be definitely diluted.

I love Orps! I had a gorgeous buff rooster last year, but he just died one night. No signs of trauma or fighting or any thing. He just seemed to have laid down and died. Strangest thing. Some day I will add a few to my flock again. They just have the nicest personalities.

Well....I am sad to say my last little hatching egg chick was a quitter. I was so so so so sad. I had named her and everything. So today I, totally on a whim searched silkie chickens on craigslist and there was a breeder who JUST posted! I was able to contact her and within an hour had 2 fuzzy butt loves in my life! So allow me to introduce my big Buddha and my little nugget Mo! Buddha is very protective of Mo. If you remove Mo, Buddha hollers and hollers until you give him back! It is adoreable! I love them so much!

Just talked with the person I got my Buff Silkie and OEG hatching eggs from and was told there was a mistake...they were not OEG, but rather Mille Fleur Bearded Belgium D'Uccle eggs! The eggs from the OEG breeding pen had been put in a different carton, so I got the Mille Fleur instead. So now I'm REALLY excited!

I candled them all this afternoon and there are lots of veins and heartbeats. They are under a VERY dedicated broody hen, so keeping my fingers crossed that they hatch out.
