Jurastic Park Chicks??

Yes on grit. I start sprinkling a little granite grit in my chicks feed a day or two before i start letting them have "solid" treats. So far i've had no problem. After you let them out for visits to the great unknown they will start to pick up grit off the ground. I still recommend letting them have access to store bought grit all the time. Good Luck. O Yea on the cricket thing.... our Yorkie named Mugsy helps me hunt crickets when we go to check on the chicks. It's funny>

I was sitting watching my week old chicks in their brooder and a tiny spider started making its way down from the ceiling into their brooder and I was like oh mr spider do you know where you are headed?? Soon on of my chicks spotted it and waited patiently for it to get close enough and *snapped* it right off its string!!! It was so funny. Who needs exterminators when you have chickens!!

To those that were wondering about age, you can probably start at about a week but you need to make sure that you're only giving a small amt... chick start really is the best diet for them, but sometimes it's hard not to give treats when they ham it up like that! I just stuck a tiny bowl of grit in there for them when I put the first crickets in.

I was a little concerned because this afternoon (I posted a separate post asking) my daughter thought the grit was food and dropped a teaspoon full into the brooder...the chicks are 5 days old...at first I thought, well if they were in the wild being raised by momma, they'd have grit the second the pecked at the ground, but then I wasn't sure???

So at day 5 I'm going to assume it's OK they have the grit now...

Their chested seemed a little packed...or swollen on the right side (both chickes) maybe they needed the grit? Or maybe they need some sort of something else? hope not!!!
