Impacted crop comes from a chicken eating items that make a ball of hard stuff
such as grass clippings and or hard cores out of vege's and fruit
ie: possibly a seed of a peach or some thing like that
some plums also have seeds
but the grass clippings definetly need grit feed at same time and cut up by mower etc

with that said the birds may also go to a spoiled food supply and eat the spoiled food or eat maggots that have been on spoiled meat
ang get botulism
for botulisn it takes
1 cup of epsom salts to 4 gallons of water fed this for two days to nuligy the botulism

THIS ON SOUR CROP
it is very important to do the flush ASAP you notice the crop hard and bird not so good
as the longer you wait the less chance you have to help save the chicken
For sour crop which can come from drinking in a bad water source or eating spoiled food and need to be flushed

then one takes and makes a flush water of
1/2 cup of baking soda to pint of warm water

then have the chicken facing you on a table
and using a childs ear syringe so you can put the syringe tube to the back side of the throat and expressing the soda water into the crop

then come up from below the crop with your fingers to bring out the spoiled sour mess
chickens do not throw up so you have to force the spoiled sour mess out the beak

DO THE FLUSH THREE TIMES IN A ROW
so the baking soda can nulify the sour crop

NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT THING HERE IS

DO NOT FEED THE BIRD FOR 24 HRS AFTER FLUSHING CROP
let the crop rest and the soda to do its work

also then only feed the bird a slice of bread soaked in milk
with Vit E twice daily for a week
OR GIVE IT BOILED EGG YOLK ONLY
as egg yolk will break up and so will the soft bread

DO NOT FEED ANY THING ELSO FOR A WEEK
NOTHING HARD AS IT WILL NOT HEAL GOOD
and you will be back to a sour crop

Also in the bread soaked put 1-1000 mg of Vit E by cutting the tip off the Vit E capsule and squeezing it on the bread
twice a day for a week

My reason for posting this is the last few days we tried to help with sour crop and some folks still fed apples etc which are hard items to the sick birdsthis was not helping to heal the birds

any questions just email me on any thing

Glenda,

Would you please post a picture or instructions about which opening in the back of the throat goes to the crop? It woudl be awful to attempt this and accidently aspirate a bird by forcing the liquid into its lungs rather than its crop.

Thanks!

I don't have any pictures but my way of doing it with young pigeons and chickens of all ages
was to put the childs syringe into the beak and put the tip of the syringe to back of throat on the right side
In all the yrs doing it I never had a failure
nor did I have a failure on the crop surgery

it is just natural for some to trust their own judgement
and do not expell the soda water too fast
remember the chicken is in your domain and will respond as you lead it thru the procedure

I was up till 2:30 severl nites living in South Carolina when folks called me to get them thru a crop surgery

that is why I rell folks to always stand the bird up in front of them on a tabel

if you got some one to hold on to the bird it is better
but did many of them by my self

ofcourse my want was to be a vet but never had the chance to do so

any and all questions just email me

E-mail PM Milk flush for coccidiosisSo many people have issues and ask questions about coccidiosis that I thought I would post this milk flush treatment that I cam across. This is a treatment that a college agricultural dept. came up with. You can break it down into a smaller portion but this is as it was listed.

4 pounds of dried milk
2 pounds of corn meal
2 pounds of oatmeal
1 pound of bran

Feed this for 3-5 days with no other feed except some greens. The large amount of milk makes the chicks thirsty, causing them to drink. The milk sugar will turn to acid in the stomach and the extra added water will flush out the system.

Maybe this will help some of you that has a hard time finding the corid/amprol in your area.

Natural
Treatments
Keeping birds in general good health is
always important. Some small producers
provide raw milk, yogurt, apple cider
vinegar, or probiotics to birds, believing
that beneficial microbes will prevent or
treat coccidiosis. Actually, coccidia do not
compete with bacteria in the gut; therefore,
beneficial bacteria and other microbes
will not eliminate coccidial development.
However, anything that improves the overall
health of the gut and the bird can help
reduce the impact of coccidiosis. Also, a
population of beneficial bacteria is always
better than pathogenic bacteria, since coccidia
weaken the gut wall, and bacteria may
pass through. In short, feeding dairy products
or probiotics will not stop the coccidia
through “competitive exclusion” but does
provide nutrients or beneficial bacteria that
are useful in any situation.
Producers sometimes give diatomaceous
earth (DE) to the birds in the belief that the
sharp edges of the fossilized diatoms will
damage the parasites and reduce coccidiosis;
however, there is no scientific data to
support its use.

Drugs
Drugs are used for two different purposes:
To prevent illness
To treat illness
Although a producer may depend on management
for coccidiosis control, a drug such
as amprolium is useful for rescue treatment
in the case of an outbreak. There is no
need to destroy infected birds; they can be
treated. In large houses, it is necessary to
routinely use drugs or vaccines because of
the high density of birds.
Types of Drugs
Sulfa drugs: An exciting discovery
in the 1930s was that sulfa drugs
would prevent coccidiosis—the first
drugs shown to do so. Sulfa drugs
also have some antibacterial action.
However, a relatively large amount
of sulfa was needed (10-20 percent
of the diet) and could be tolerated
by the bird for only a short time,
since it caused rickets. (Reid, 1990)
Sulfa drugs had to be used intermittently
(e.g., three days on and three
days off). Nowadays, comparatively
small amounts of sulfamonaides,
such as sulfaquinoxaline, are
used. They work only against
Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria
maxima, not against Eimeria
tenella. Sulfamonaides are used to
treat coccidiosis.
Amprolium: Amprolium is an anticoccidial
drug. It has also been
used for many years and needs no
withdrawal time to guard against
residue in the meat. It is given in
the drinking water and interferes
with metabolism of the vitamin thiamin
(vitamin B1) in coccidia. Amprolium
treats both intestinal and
cecal coccidia.
