Just a quick medicine question....

It says it good for another 2-3 months

  1. It *was* good for that long, prior to being turned into an oral suspension -- then? Best-case scenario, it's still less than a month 'til it's not any good.
  2. Also, you were given an amount that was supposed to given 'til it ran out, which means it's gonna run out before you've given it long enough to not create a situation in which bacteria w/in the bird will likely develop resistance to enrofloxacin.

Two reasons why you should make sure that bottle makes it to the landfill ... but, you can start your flock on another treatment: An astringent solution of Apple Cider Vinegar at the rate of four teaspoons to the gallon (but not in galvanized metal containers). This is an effective treatment for many respiratory diseases, as it reduces the viscosity of mucus, making it more easily expelled by your birds, and removes coatings w/in mouth, throat and intestines, which improves the uptake of nutrients/vitamins, as well as any medication(s) you may end up givin' to 'em ~'-)

They do come in different amounts but it should ONLY be given in 22.7mg unless your treating a 50lb. bird.
Baytril doses are calculated by the weight of the animal. Even though Baytril (Enrofloxacin) is banned for use in food animals, many of us poultry people have Baytril 100 (injectable 100mg/ml), some have the injectable 22.7 (22.7mg/ml). My avian vets have instructed me to give it at 15mg/kg once a day by mouth or SC for 5 days when treating for secondary bacterial infections associated with Histomoniasis.

Baytril is so strong, that is why we have to compound it
It is very strong, but that's not why it's compounded.

BUT all of the info reguarding dosage, mg, strength, length of use, expiration date, etc should have been included on the label for safety purposes and legal purposes.
Yes, that should have been on the bottle. But what if the bird that it was compounded for weighed 2 pounds and this one weighs 5 pounds? Wouldn't they get different amounts? You know, some number of mg/pound?

Vet should have record of this medicine that was given that day but my guess is that it has already gone bad. This stuff compounded, doesn't last.
Some compounded drugs, like Metonidazole (Flagyl), do last longer, if stored properly.

However, it doesn't seem that they want to contact their vet, therefore risking information on here.
Tablets are never mixed with water. It is a compounding liquid.
And they come in many flavors.

If they were mixed with water they would turn right then.
More importantly, they don't mix properly, so it's very difficult to ensure proper dosing.

You have to understand I do this for a living and went to school for it so it comes naturally now haha

EVERY vet is different. EVERYONE will have different information and may agree/ disagree. I am not on here to be proved wrong, corrected, or write a biography explaining baytril! I can point out various things in your statements that are wrong (spelling) but we have already established they are going to ask their parents so everything can be acurate and can have an answer.

Yes, all vets are different. But I seriously doubt that *any* vet would prescribe a drug with weighing the animal first, right? Other than spelling, what did I say that was wrong? BTW, your spelling isn't perfect either.

Ok, stop or leave.

Great news! He's already doing better! He hasn't been supper sneezy or coughing! His breathing of course is still raspy and gurgling, but the flock accepted him today and he has been crowing for the first times today! :D so happy! Thanks for the info guys! Will post a pic in a little while.... He wouldn't hold still enough to get a pic!

How awesome thats great to hear! It's always good when they turn around! Just curious, did you continue an antibiotic on it or is it just doing better day by day?
