Why does it make me so darned happy when a chick hatches? I mean, every single time. It's not old, after 45 some chicks. I already know I'm odd, in that it doesn't bother me if only one or two eggs hatch in a group of 24 - I am just thrilled to pieces when one hatches! It is best when they have a buddy or three, but A CHICK HATCHED! From something I could possibly have cracked and cooked for a meal 21 days earlier.
There's a marvelous, little living creature that wouldn't have been there if I hadn't placed an egg into an incubator and set everything as best as I could for its development. It pips a little crack, then a hole. And then it zips around that shell. And it peeps, and wriggles, and rests. And then it struggles out of the opened shell (most of the time by itself) and then rests some more. And THEN, and THEN: it fluffs up and is able to wobble around on its legs.
A living creature.
