Hi, I've got 3 old hens (3 1/2 years) and 4 1 year olds. I have one hen, I think an old bird laying some very odd looking shells. The shape and size is fine but the outer shell looks like she started to form another shell on it. At least that's what I thought at first. You see these patches of rough area are raised and are tiny little round particles. Again, I thought shell now I'm wondering....is it possible it is some kind of creatures egg??

I'm not sure which bird it is from and all seem to be healthy. When I crack open the egg there is usually a little bit of blood inside but I just thought it was an old bird. Yes, I'd like to cull her (have to talk my soft hearted partner into that) but don't know whose it is yet. As long as nothing really creepy (like bugs eggs on my chicken's egg) is happening I am not panicked.
I didn't want to make my picture file too big but just so you know each one of those patches is made up of tiny little pellet thingys. thanks for your help

.

I'm guessing it's calcium deposits. Some attribute more of these to older birds, but some young birds have them on their eggs as well. It's nothing to worry about.
