just ate his head!

I had a cat do this to a pigeon once. He just took the head off.

I have to disagree with the thing about foxes. Foxes have been my main predator here. They have always toted the birds off, leaving a trail of feathers, and ate them out in the woods. Then the next come back for another one. Usually not taking more than one bird, but always toting them off into the woods.

Thanks everybody! I had only the one chicken to loose his head so maybe what ever it was is gone now.

I thought I was loosin it, didn't know what it could of been...THANKS AGAIN All Take care!

Yes I would say its a Great Horned Owl they take the heads and leave the bodies. They will wipe your flock out soon too. If you have a big barn around with a loft and a large opening, there is where U will find him. I had one a few years ago that roosted in ours, large crap piles full of bones and broken skulls. As most people dont use the lofts for square bales of hay anymore, they are finding nice homes.

I lost a housefull of chickens in one night to a weasel that came through a small hole in the floor. No blood anywhere, just dead bodies minus heads. Hole was smaller than a baseball and I never thought about it being a problem. I put new floor down, new walls up, and sat in there looking for daylight to peak in. Every hole and window now has ratwire. I hate bullies of any sort, and really hate weasels. We lost first 2 flocks to dogs we didn't see. They made a hole in the chain link big enough for a person to crawl through. Neighbor lost his last week to dog he saw and can identify. Woe be unto that dog if he ever steps in to that neighbor's yard again.

That is really interesting. My neighbors ordeal, she saw the fox stalking them (after it killed them) but it didnt eat them, leave a trail, or anything. Just killed them (deheaded them) and left them. But, I can udnerstand that is not typically the case

I found one of my hens dead, without a head, one day. While standing there thinking about it, I was startled when a little hawk, about the size of a pigeon swooped right over my head, and made a grab for another hen. Had she not ducked at the last instant, she would have lost her head. The little hawk would have never been able to lift that big chicken, but he was going so fast that her head would have popped right off if he had grabbed it.
