Hi I'm am new to chickens and I am getting some baby chicks delivered on the 22nd but my friend offered me a rooster and I want him I just don't know if I should mix him in the day I get the chicks or before or after or should I put him in after the chicks get to a size where they can fend for themselves I know nothing about this rooster she said he was nice but I know they can be mean please help

I would suggest waiting until your chicks are a little bit older like six to eight weeks. I'm guessing you ordered just hens? If you ordered both, then an extra rooster will create havoc and you will be looking for homes for them anyway. Our rooster is disinterested in our little ones - but they have protective mommies & he has girls of his own. We have a Rhode Island Red rooster with three hens his own size and a banty rooster with two hens - any more roosters than that and it's fight night in the chicken yard and just flat out no fun.
