Just bought feed...full of bugs!!

I'd take it back. If the store won't take it back, call the mfg. and talk to them about it. Unacceptable.

As far as soy vs. corn, I'm afraid you are stuck there. Most feeds have a large % corn. That is why the price of feed went up so bad when corn hit the roof. But someone that is in the business/know might chime in and confirm that.

...I think I'll get to making my own at some point....

Good reference page...a little technical, but worth the read.

By the way, I'm with the "return it to the store" camp. I had moths come into my house in a bag of bird seed. Started out as a pesky problem but rapidly turned into several weeks of concentrated work to be rid of them.

Good luck.

how many chickens are you feeding? I have gone through a bag of feed(or more) since this thread has started.. unless it takes you like a month to get rid of a bag, feed it up..

I would not feed it to the chickens.
I would take it back to where ever you bought it from.
I had bought a bag of layer pellets from the feed store and they turned out to be molded when I opened the bag at my home. The brand "Nutrena" guarantees all their products against any defect, I exchanged the bad feed for a new bag and that was that.

I'm not sure where you live, but here in the south in the summer there is a big bug & moisture problem with any type of feed.

I store my feed inside my home. I don't have a garage right now and no other options open to me at this time. So far we haven't had any problems.

Good luck.

I buy my feed from the mill. It is fresh and smells good when you open it.. The sweet feed there is terrific for my horses. I even give some to the chickens cause they like the alfalfa pellets and bits of corn.
I only buy a weeks worth at a time in this hot weather.
Now in the winter I buy more in case of bad weather and all.

I used to buy Nutrena feed till it went to 40 lb. bags! and the price went up... It was never the same consistency either. One week maybe crumbles the next almost powder!
I was hesitant on using the layer mash from the mill but my chickens love it!! I use feeders so no waste there.
If I were you I would take it back and get my money and go elsewhere!

The feedstore is aallllllllllll the way back across town. It's one of the only places that carries organic feed. It's a 50 lb bag and it will take me at least a month to go through (I think) or more. If I fed 25 lbs at a time, I would just feed it to the chickens. However, the bugs could destroy my feed before I would have a chance to feed it. I am only feeding 5 chickens - 3 teenage' chicks (12ish weeks old) and 2 9 month old hens. LOL I think I've been through a pound of feed since this thread started!

I don't think I live close enough to a mill to get my feed fresh :-/ I wish!

CMV - thanks for the chicken feed link, I'll check it out!

If the feedstore was right down the street, I'd take it back. Unfortunately, it's really out of my way to go back. I think I've learned my lesson and this store simply won't get my business again.

They're Grain Beetles. I once bought a 30 pound bag of rat food that was infested with them. Unfortunately I did not notice until a few days after I dumped the bag of food into the bin.....in my bedroom. I found them for several weeks after I got rid of the food. Grain beetles are harmless though, not so different from your chickens eating bugs off the ground outside. I'd probably just feed it haha

For me it would be a matter of principle, I would either get fresh feed or I would get a refund. After that was done then they would lose my business.
