Just bought feed...full of bugs!!

If you don't have many choices of where to buy your feed, principle is tempered quite a bit.. I wonder If you could not buy your feed someplace else, would your principles be as high??

there is really not much wrong with the feed.. it has some meal beetles.. so what? the chickens will probably eat them before going after the feed..

I have already found those bugs in corn meal from the store.. I sifted them out and the cornbread tasted just fine afterwards..

Pretty much all you can do is either take it back to the store, feed it, or eat it yourself...that is, throw it out and eat the cost.

I found several really dusty waterbugs in a bag of starter/grower from my feedmill once.. I didn't know if they were mine or the feedstore's, but I was kinda like...oh well...it happens.

I can certainly understand taking really buggy feed back to the store, as well as moldy feed, or any other feed with an obvious defect.. What I can't understand is what seems to be all the outrage and stunned disbelief I see in this thread.

It's feed...bugs like feed...it's made in a factory and stored in a warehouse; it's not like this came from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory or Intel...the OP said it was organic feed, which means it probably sits around longer than other commercial feeds, and is probably buggier from the get-go due to the reduction or elimination of pesticides on the ingredients...

Aggravating...sure. Understandable...I think so. Something to get way bent out of shape over...not hardly.

JMHO.

i worked at a co-op adn we made our own feed there. and so i kinda feel qualified here to explain. 1 i would guess that yes your feed is old, Take It Back. anyone else who buys that feed probably is also getting buggy feed, i'm saying this cuz its roganic, mosst farmers are not gonna pay more to feed chickens. if it was regular layer from my store, well it probably means there was a tinyhole in the bag and bugs got in, or a mouse chewed a hole and bugs got in. its not intentional, but they might not know there was a problem unless you tell them. at the least i would call them and tell them what happened. we had a really bad rat/mouse infestation in our warehouse and had a big problem with this for a while. noone is going to be angry at you or anything. as for taking your money elsewhere though... i would only do that if it was a HABitual problem. or they were rude when you tried to return it.

I don't think I would eat it if it had bugs in it... I mean if they are in the corn meal, they're LIVING in it. The bugs eating it is one thing, but after they eat the corn meal... they POOP in the corn meal, lay eggs etc.

IMHO feeding buggy feed to your chickens might be alright. I just cant see eating it myself.

Isn't rats with fleas in the flour how the black plague started???

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm keeping the feed in the freezer. I can't justify going alllllllll the way back across town to get another bag of the same buggy stuff.

I plan to call the feed store to let them know their feed is buggy.

Thanks for all your suggestions!
