When we first got chickens we let them walk amongst our tomato beds. We figured they'd eat any beetles or bugs in the beds. Well, they did do a decent job of knocking down the beetle population, but after a while they got a taste for the tomatoes themselves. They snacked on tomato plants for a whole summer and we saw no ill effects.
