Americanas and Rhode Island Reds will be very good starting breeds for you. I've had an Americana (also known as Easter Eggers) and a Rhode Island Red, and they've both been great layers.

You've chosen some wonderful breeds to start out with!

Both Ameraucanas (or Easter Eggers, as most "Ameraucanas" from feed stores/hatcheries usually are) and Rhode Island Reds tend to be hardy, gentle, very productive birds.

Good luck with your chicks!

Thank you both! Patrick has had chickens before but I haven't; however, I am the "researcher" in the family so I will read and explore and confirm and his birds are the Rhode Island reds as he is familiar with them and the EE's are mine. I read up on all sorts of breeds to determine those would be my favorite due to temperament and of course, the pretty colored eggs. We have grandkids that are young that will be coming over to feed/play etc and I am so excited for them to learn about chickens. Last year we started small with aquaponics and my gbaby that comes over always has to go feed the fish! Now she can learn to help with the chickens! I am so eggcited (yes my humor isn't for everyone) about all that we will learn. :) Thank you all for such a warm welcome.

Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens, and our Easter Eggers are her favorites. She loves their colored eggs. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you Michael... hopefully they will be over tomorrow. She is very excited about all the babies and I know she will be so excited to add it to her list of things to do when she is over. Nothing like teaching them responsibility and homegrown basics when they are young. :) Your gdaughter is a cutie pie!

You're welcome, and thanks for the complement on my granddaughter. I certainly think so, but then again I'm sure I'm very biased. :o)
