Just culled my first chickens and one had red splotches on its skin

I think it could just be his hormones.. If he was heathy there should be not difference in taste. You could remove his skin.. Did you go threw his iner's ? His testicles could have been larger.. Our rooster, a silkie had 3x the normal size of a regular rooster.. He had some red spot's on his skin. How many other did you process?

Oh :( I don't know then.. doesn't look like anything I know.

Sometimes the large, cornish chickens have bruises on the breast because they are laying down all the time and it kinda looks like that, but a healthy rooster that would stand up and run and etc.. I doubt it would do that.

I really have no idea! Sorry.

When you killed him, was it in a cone or did you let him do chicken dance on the ground? Was his chest flopping against something? I've seen splotches like that on wings when the chicken was small and there was enough room for flapping in the cone.

I have a roo that likes to perch on a 2x4 all the time and must lay his keel on it when he does because he has red markings down his chest and some of the feathers are worn off. It looks very similar to this (except he is still alive)

We did not use a cone, didnt have one and wasnt expecting to have to cull a couple roosters. He did flop around alot afterwards, I hated it but I guess it could have been from that. I appreciate all the responses. I will let everyone know tomorrow if he tasted ok cause he is going on the grill tomorrow.

If he didn't go in the pot right away, you're going to want to rest him in the fridge for a few days, otherwise he'll be tough as shoe leather. Just bag him or put him in a sealed container so he doesn't dry out and leave him in the fridge until his joints can bend again.

Ya tomorrow will be two days so I am hoping he will be well rested by then

How old was he?

I have a rooster in my freezer (I hope you are not sad that yours is.. dead.. and that we can talk about this? I am sorry if you were attached to him :( ).

I have eaten meat chicks before but never a rooster. I read the taste is different. Mine was about 1 year old and he was.. active? lol. He produced a few offsprings. I was VERY suprized by the size of the testies versus the 3-4 months old I had culled before (a few months old the testies were a little larger than a pea, versus my rooster, they were about big as my thumb!).

I hope it taste more like a game bird or something similar. Let us know about the toughness of the meat and the taste as well if you want, I am interested :)
