Just curious.. How would you fix the unemployment problem?

Tell China to GTHO, get the government to GTHO, and sit back and watch. The economy will get better (Without government help!), and with a better economy comes jobs.

I have noticed a lot of posts about NAFTA or other trade related solutions... what about Immigration? does anyone have a take on that? I know personally thats a huge factor here in ontario

whats going on is they are bringing foreign workers as live in care givers reducing the amount of full time positions for us local girls. A lot of the time these workers that are bring brought in are unskilled workers acting as nurses.. because they (the employers) can get away with paying them peanuts a month and have them on call 24/7

I would vote for support for more education, so that people who have spent their lives in the industries of the past could change careers and learn skills to become a part of the industries of the future: technology, communications, medicine, green energy, high-speed transit, space exploration and space mining...things like that. We need to fund our scientists so that these industries of the future can be further developed.

The world is changing, and people have to be flexible enough to change along with it. I don't see myself doing the same thing for 30 years for the same company. That is the way of the past.

I think there should be a tax incentive for the consumer to buy American made products. I just went back to work for my previous employer (a major (American)boat company) after being laid off since June 2008.

If the consumer of a boat could get a tax incentive (like the energy star items) for buying a boat (or whatever) that is owned by a American company who builds in America and has LEGAL employees.... then wouldn't the consumer choose that item if not for anything but the savings? Then, the company would sell more, need to make more, and be able to expand it's number of employees.

In other words, we all can help the employment rate. Buy American.

gonzo&hispeeps :

I've been laid off, since July 2008... My job went to China...Its gone... I don't even consider myself unemployed anymore... If you could, How would you fix the unemployment problem here in the Good Ol' USA? I would like to see NAFTA thrown out, and heavy taxes, for American Companies that send our jobs away. I have no beef with The Chinese or Mexican workers.. I think its sad that Big Business exploits them for so little pay, and its almost slavery in some countries... Its all about more profit! How sad! Sooner or later, all the jobs will be "outsoursed" and there will be nobody here that can afford Chevy's and Whirlpool products!

Get rid of commercial farming.
The loss of the family farm has been detrimental.
We need to get back true community, where each of us contributes in a meaningful way to those around us, rather then our contribution going who knows where, to who knows what.

Buy America is a fairly new concept outside of government. Thankfully, we are required to Buy America if we spent federal dollars, and guess what? We are spending federal dollars. Has anyone ever tried to audit sub-contractors purchases on a 19 million dollar project before?

The good news is that we have only found two purchase outside the US and they were for small items.

As a small business owner I would like to see fewer taxes and fees applied to small business. Free up money in the small business owners hands and allow that money to be passed back into the community via employees and local purchasing. Free up money so that local small business can offer things like healthcare ect. In my particular industry my cpa says Im doing really well to keep 5 to 10 cents of every dollar that comes into my business.
Think about how hard it is to make it on that. Figure out a way to let small business keep more money in the flow of the business and small businesses will hire more people increase output and spread that money around the community via payroll and purchasing.
I admit I am not knowledgable about things like this but I believe the key to helping reduce unemployment, and improving the economy needs to start at a smaller local level with small business and spread from there. Just my .02

yup..they do it here too..
the local farms hire immigrants to come during corn and tabacoo harvest time... they bus them in..and house them..and all the locals lose the jobs.
Also...one of my foster sons moved back to his hometown on the cape... he worked for a big landscaping company... this company used to bring in all kinds of immigrants from a few countries (on like 3-6 month work programs..)... and again...many locals lost the jobs.
Its just not right... and it pisses me off.

The illegal workers here are not the problem. Outsourcing jobs is. I no longer buy Hershey's chocolate. Hershey's closed down a perfectly good plant in Oakdale California and moved the operation to Mexico. My sister works for a large corporation. They just laid off a bunch of people and sent the jobs to India. That just isn't right.
