Just curious ...Prop 2?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposition_2

Look
there

This is basically what it requires

Requires that calves raised for veal, egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs be confined only in ways that allow these animals to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn around freely.

Exceptions made for transportation, rodeos, fairs, 4-H programs, lawful slaughter, research and veterinary purposes.

I am glad that it passed.

It certainly does seem more humane, doesn't it?

Does seem like it is more humane,at least on the surface. Sounds like I may get better prices for my eggs.

It's not going to be the end of battery cage laying hens or veal production, but it will give them more room. It just says they have to be able to lay down and turn around, so the cage is a bit bigger. It's a step in the right direction, but it's not the end of farming like some predict. Having until 2015 to get going is way more than enough time, those cages are replaced every 4 or 5 years anyway according to the one farm near here that I know the owner of.

Yes it will effect prices, simply put not as many hens will fit in a building now that they have to have a bigger cage, and so some costs like heat and light will go up per bird. But some costs will go down too, like ventilation which is huge in the summer, so you might see it balance out. Still even at a bit more cost I think it's worth it.

Think about it this way, too.

How many of us gladly pay higher than grocery store prices for fresh eggs when our girls are not yet laying or in molt or whatever? Why? Because of the way the hens are treated.

I know I do.

Your right Terrie. I pay a bit more at the farmers market than go to a store. Besides the place I hit up I used to work at
