Just curious who else is living super frugal

Our girls LOVE wombat! Sheesh, what's wrong with it?? ;) I stay away from potato peels because 1. they don't like them, and 2...most of ours seem to have some green; so straight to compost here. I do feed them raw meat though...just beef when I have trimmings from grinding. They go totally wild for it. I wouldn't feed them raw roadkill or anything, though.

We donate extra eggs to our local foodbank as well. There's not enough to go around of course, but I figure every little bit helps. I particularly like to see them go to families with children...the protein is even more important for them than for adults.
We aren't all as wealthy as you, Mickey! Most can't afford the import duties for wombat for our chickens. We just have to settle for pheasant pate' for our doggies!

I mentioned raw meat mostly out of respect for pathogens, and your fresh meat trimmings are probably clean. Things that might be harboring salmonella, e-coli, trichinosis, those sort of things. It doesn't necessarily kill them, but they can become infected and be carriers. Mine eat mice whenever they get a chance (ugh) and you KNOW they are getting roundworms from them.

I hear Carnation is coming out with something called "Wombatios". Some sort of artificial, wombat flavored snack treat approved for children and chickens. Perhaps that will bring wombat fed chickens within the reach of the commoner as well! Still, we can dream.

I'd steer away from that Wombatios...I hear it's a GMO based product...UGH!

Actually, I have a friend who travels to Oz fairly frequently on business and she smuggles the 'bat in for us...comes dried, so she can jam a lot in her suitcase ;)

That's exactly why I only give 'em beef when it's fresh...or sometimes older deli meat we have on hand. I caught a mouse last week and took it to their pen to see if they'd catch it. They wouldn't even come closer than a foot when I held it by the tail for 'em and when I let it go, it ran off...and so did they...the chickens! sheesh

Here and I thought you were using your Canuck Connections in the black market to smuggle them in from 'the Great White North'! I'm so sorry to have misjudged you, Mickey!

I've only seen 2 mice in the yard, both times when I was cleaning the coop. It was like something from 'Jurassic Park'! Raptors after the defensless mammal, only to tear it to bits (shudder).

Genetically modified wombats, eh? Who woulda thunk it? Oh yeah, Monsanto Corp.!

I need to trade you a couple of my chicken chickens for a couple of your raptors! Maybe 3...then I could bring one in the house to get all the little critters that have invaded! Maybe mine are just lazy...don't seem to mind scratching for grubs, but just aren't into actually chasing food :(

My turkeys are like that, VERY resistant to change. Almost starved to death when I tried to change them from crumbles to pellets. When I tossed in some whole grain for a treat, they just looked at it for a while, then trod it into the dirt. It was really fun when I tried to give them some BOSS, They started clucking like and evading it like it was a predator! A month ago I was moving some pallets and found a cricket. Thinking I would give them a treat, I threw it to them. After much alarm clucking they bravely beat a hasty retreat.

I keep hearing stories about what great foragers they are, yet mine are like kids that will only eat Spaghetti-Os and chocolate milk!

LOL, you got chicken turkeys and I've got chicken chickens...silly things...they don't know what good stuff is! Ours had been raised on mash and when we got them we decided we wanted to switch to pellets. I had a feeling they might have "issues" so when we got to the last 1/4 bag of mash, we started mixing pellets in with it, gradually increasing the pellets so that by the time the mash was gone they were on 100% pellets. It seemed to have worked...they didn't do a lot of waste and didn't run screaming in fear from the feeder. LOL

Finally on the computer with the pictures, can post a picture of "super llama" with my "Super Wife"!

He has a MUCH better haircut now!
