Just curious who else is living super frugal

I haven't read this entire thread (it is 260 pages long!!!) but for a couple of reasons (only one being the economy), I have been living my mom's advice:

'Use it up, wear it it out, make it do, or do without.'

Oh, and my girls provide the protein to go with the fruits and veggies I produce in my garden. :). (Being a vegetarian helps keep the costs down too,)

good gracious... Im not sure what happened on the above post. I was using my phone, trying to say I love the quote that your mom says. Apparently I REALLY loved your post. hahaha oopsy. sorry. I think I should just use my laptop for future posts..

@lismarc I have similar difficulties with my iPad. :) And it is good advice. It makes a great mantra too. In fact, I was humming it yesterday when I realized that the last time I bought jeans was in 2007. Talk about wearing those babies out! Hahahahaha!

Those must be some goooood jeans. hahaha it's been a very long time since I've bought jeans for myself as well.
When I buy them for my 18 yo daughter, I have to pay extra it seems, for jeans with holes already in them. HUH??? It's in style, she says. So you and I should be in "style" before to long.

I can't quite understand the jeans with holes in them. I mean, it kind of defeats the purpose of the jeans themselve.

I keep mine untill I wear them out or outgrow them; usually both. About ~1.5 years, give or take. (Gravel driveways are not very soft...)

@lismarc ,those long-lived jeans are kept well away from the barn - and gravel roads! My barn jeans ... they're a different and sorry looking story! There's not enough iron patching in the world to save some of them. But seriously, I read somewhere long ago that we tend to wash our jeans too often. Since my "good" jeans are reserved for work only, they don't get grimy or sweaty. Unless I spill something on them, they generally don't go into the wash more frequently than once every few weeks, or even once a month. That may be why I've been able to eek out so many years in just two pairs.

@Beekissed, what's your secret?

One of my other frugal practices is to never buy extras of anything if I can possible help it: coats, barn gloves, frying pans, brooms, you name it. Since I can only use or wear one of those things at a time,I don't see any point in collecting extras just for the sake of having them. Keeping duplication to a minimum also has the wonderful effect of reducing housework. It takes time to take care of stuff, whether you use it or not. It took me years (and a houseful of people for Thanksgiving) before I owned more than a four-place setting of dinner ware and dining utensils!! Friends still come to my house and marvel at the 'empty' rooms! :) Me: I love it. Spartan living is frugal living.
