Just curious who else is living super frugal

IF , and that is a big IF, I drink coffee, it is decafinated, unless I bought a bag on sale, than I'l buy anything chea. BUt I usually make cowboy coffee: pour grinds in a pot and fill will water, and boil until I get back to it. :lau

Not sure if that much boiling does anything to the caffiene, but that pot usually lasts a few days as I dont chug coffee anymore, it is just a pleasurable drink now.

Citrus green tea???  What stores carry this??????

I buy Sweet Leaf Citrus Green Tea when it's on sale At Kroger . It's usda organic. On sale it us 1 dollar per bottle. One bottle lasts for 5-6 glasses because I add a small amount to my brewed glass of tea. Lipton makes one but it has junk in it.
One bottle lasts 2.3 days.

Just a little helpful hint: If you have a hard time using up your potatoes before they grow eyes all over them, try this, put a few apples (any kind) in with your bin of potatoes and you will get at least an extra week or two. The Apples give off a gas that helps preserve the potatoes.

Great tip, 1chickendog142! I am wondering if that will work with onions too.

When I was a kid I remember harvesting the onions, laying them on huge old window screens to dry and then braiding them up. Funny though, I dont remember what happened to them after that. We had potatos with onions ( mashed potatos mom's style) every night so probably they didnt last very long. And we had a wood stove so house was cool and dry going intothe late fall.

In 2012, we had a bumper crop of sweet, purple and green onions. We planted so many green onions, I wasn’t able to harvest all of them until they grew almost to the size of regular onions, but even at that stage they were good to eat. I braded them all up and placed them in our power shed. They lasted a fairly long time out there, but eventually they began to rot. By that time, many of them were consumed, but I still hated to see the rest of them go to waste. The power shed has a concrete floor, and walls with a raftered roof – good ventilation. If I had a hydrator, perhaps that waste would not have happened.
Our potatoes seem to get soft fairly quick – I am wondering if that is due to the heat that we get in Central California. Ultimately, I will need to build a root cellar. We live in hilly country; so digging one out of the side of a hill should give me what I need. I’ll remember to keep a place for apples.

Get you one of those videlia chopper thingys and chop up a ton of them. Put in freezer bags and freeze. Use the rest the eat until gone. Can you maybe chop up your potatoes and blanch them 2 min in boiling water and freeze in baggies. Or maybe chop up and can them. It would last all winter. Sweet potatoes are great for chunking up and canning. You could even add the brown sugar and stuff.

Sweet potatos and pumpkin are two items specifically mentioned in my canning book to not can-- at least not as a puree. Perhaps as chunk would work. Apparently on commercial canning companies are able to monitor and can the pureed pumkin.

My mother had an old house built with a full in ground foundation. THe whole basement functioned as a root celler. Let in lots of water thru the cracks in the stone foundation and the cement floor sucked up the moisture = cold and damp. Great for storing potatos. SHe would buy 50# bags from the coop. I think back on how much money she spent on food but always found inexpensive bulk sources to keep the quality up. I miss the 10# blocks of cheese. Though maybe it is a good thing I cant buy that as I might eat it all. GOodness I would eat a 1/2 # of cheese a day.

Love the idea of putting up chopped onions-- ready to eat /use.
