Just curious who else is living super frugal

Hmm, I like the idea of freezing chopped onions. And canning potatoes. Those are both ripening now in my garden, and of course zucchini. Tomatoes are just starting. Can't wait for cucumber soon. I love this time of year.

Putting cut up potatoes in boiling water a good idea. I would like to freeze some of our potatoes in the form of hash browns – for breakfast. I wasn’t sure just how to go about that. Speaking of hash browns, back in the 60’s, I was in Georgia (USAF) for about a year. I acquired an appreciation for Grits – hominy … that would be a good food for storage also. Grits, butter and soft boiled eggs – yum!

The hashbrowns you buy in the store are typically parboiled before frozen. Onions can also be dehydrated for future use. If you dry them til crispy you can even make your own onion powder.

Anyone know why the apple keeps potatoes from sprouting? An apple sealed in a paper bag with avacados will make them ripen faster.

Apples give off a gas... is it methane??? Any fruit sealed in a paper bag will ripen faster b/c it holds the gas in. Are you sure apples don't HASTEN sprouting of potatoes??? I challenge an experiment!!!

Oh shoot. I thought I was on to something.

OK now I have to chime in....LOL. The Chemical is Ethelyene gas. But there is some controversy. The following link addresses the two points of view.

This article about avocados talks about what I know. Avocados do not ripen on the tree. The only ripen after they have been picked... Or in nature they ripen after they drop into the leaf litter under the tree. Again the Ethelyene gas is what ripens the Avocado. When you buy an avocaco in the store that is firm You place the avocado in a brown paper bag to contain the ethelyene gas to speed up the ripening process... To further speed it up put a tomato or an apple or a bananna in the bag as well.

Do not refrigerate un ripened Avocados.... because it stops the process. once the Avocado is ripe then you can put it in the refrigerator.

Love those freebies. I showed hubby my find of the thermopane steel door, and Andersen windows, and he agreed that i had a nice haul.

BIG difference between ethylene and methane! I bet a dose of methane would ripen a piece of fruit also!!!

Okay, so this has pretty much nothing to do with anything regarding frugality (unless you count them being quite numerous and very much free!!)----but I've discovered that feeding Japanese beetles to my chickens is pretty much the most hysterical thing I have ever witnessed! It's like the chicken Olympics over the little buggers: chickens hurdling over other chickens and the dustbath, then the inevitable steal and keep-away. I had no idea chickens could actually run so fast. That and it keeps my garden a mite more pest free (they were hammering my dill and my borage plants).
