Just curious who else is living super frugal

I've been thinking about that. He's coming on Sat to make final plans. I may scout around to see if there are any decent trees in the front... young ones about 20' tall most likely maple or oak, that can stay for a bit of a head start on the shade. But, we've been wanting to get these trees cut for close to 40 years, and I can't wait to get my potted trees planted. Plus, it will be nice to start with a clean slate. We'll see what it looks like. I'd ought to post some before and after pics. Will try to get out with a camera this weekend. There will still be plenty of trees to the west, but not very close to the house.

IF there are any good maples -- those are so lovely in the fall. Are they good for sugaring, or another type of maple??

I'm sorry I will miss the pics cause I'll be off BYC for a week as I'm heading to Maine myself. You hae time to decide ifyou want to keep any of the trees.

Honestly I would rather use a paper bag at the grocery than anthing else-- it is the only item that is truely biodegradable. I do reuse the plastic bags over and over, and while some end in the trash ( which makes me feel sick) some are put in the recycling bin to be made into something else plastic. ( shudder)

I have no problem with cutting down trees for paper. No one ever scream about the saving of a sheaf of wheat . . . yet everyone is save the trees. Unfortunately it shows how little people actually know about the paper industry. Tree are a crop. Just that its 25-50 years between harvests. My husband spent summers in Maine evaluating the probress of the growth to determine when the timber would be ready for harvest. THese are planted trees. THe old growth trees are long gone for the most part and in some areas of the country those forests are protected as well they should be.

So my point is paper is a renewable product-- recyclable too and sooo many uses!!

I would rather hold a newspaper than look at a screen-- I would never find such interesting article on line as when poking thru a big or small newspaper.

There has been some research done that shows staring at a tablet screen for hours is really bad for your eyes. Retinal detachment in extreme cases. The desk tops are better...best of all for your eyes is the printed page.

A Dr Amen, a phycologist type-- he studies the brain-- recommends no more than 30 min a day on a "device" ; another source recommends only 1 hr max. Much less than the hours we all normally spend on these things.

I think I have decided to keep an eye out for sutable material to make into grocerie bags. WIther repurpose a polyester type materical or buy new if the price is right.

Last week I put a grain bag by the trash pile for disposla and the birds ( poults) have been pecking at it and the fine particle of white poly looks like it snowed around that bag-- this really bothers me.

Every home I have owned and I mean all, even sub divisions, had no trees. In Louisiana, that's miserable in the heat. For some reason, we always bought in places that used to be cotton fields. Now I have a 15 yr old that stands about 20' tall in my front and 2 of the same in the back. Wisterias. You probably need to keep at least one or two by the house to shield it from the sun. But the heat might not bother you like us down here.

Linda, I'm just some 6 hours-ish south of LG and I find the spring difficult-- just cant handle 70 degree days after coming out of a cold winter of 5-35 degrees-- the horses too seek shade. I have a lot of trees to the south of my house to block the summer sun. Makes for a dark interior! lol

That's what lights are for. I'll take them any day.

LOL... I have a truckers tan all year.... Left side of my face Brown.... right side Pasty.... Arms too.

Our spring started in January this year.... full on blast of 95 degrees. Hottest on record for San Diego. You know how kids make snow angels.... I went up to visit my horse and there was a horse shaped snow angel in the sand made of jet black hair....

It had been in the hundreds.

But thank goodness we are getting cooler temps now in August along with light rain. I am told were headed for an El Nino I will belive it when I see it. its going to take alot of rain to off set three years of miserable drought.
