Just curious who else is living super frugal

And here I go taking up knitting. Wonder if I can make everyone socks, my son a hat, and my daughter a cardigan before Christmas arrives? We shall see ...

A couple years ago I started knitting socks-- just needed someone to show me how to turn the heel-- and I knitted like crazy . Socks for the kids, socks for me, socks for DH . . . and since I made them I know how to darn them!! lol WOrking outside in the winter or walking on a cold floor in the house, wool socks are WONDERUL!!

Years ago I used to knit sweathers. What ever free moments I had, like at work on my breaks and at lunch time. My mother knitted waiting in the car for us to finish dance, or sports . . so knitted sweathers and mittens and hats. Recently she gave me mittens that she had originally given me at a teen to match my tan SUnday coat.

Erin-- even ifyou dont finish all by Christmas you can put an IOU card in a wrapped box.. GOod for you starting something new. My neice started knitting at 18-19 and knit beautiful shawls as gifts to all her brides maids a few years later. So you can do it !!

As I was breaking eggs this morning for quiches, I thought about the eggshells. Usually they are crushed and dumped in to the layer pens but today I wondered what else I could do with egg shells as a human food item or other ideas.

Making a large quiche for brunch today and muffin sized ones for the kids lunch boxes.

eggshells I believe are used for making Consomme....

You might also add them to bone broth.... Once the broth is extracted the bones litterally crumble and all can be crushed to add calcium to the garden....

Quote: yup!! I dont toss bones in the trash any more-- into the garden or compost!!

I canned turkey last summer ( 2013) and a year later when serving up the cats gormet dinner, the bones crumble, and brak up; very fragile.

So you use egg shells in the soup too??

Not me but I have heard they are part of the clarification process for turning broth into Consomme....

There is leftover albumen on the insides of the shells. That helps pull particulates out of the broth... But you can simply just use egg white.

They are strained off.

THis must be why my grandparents added an egg to their coffee grounds before brewing!!

dinner tonight

I just fed this family of three on
1 can of refried beans
2 small onions chopped
1 cup shreded sharp cheese
8 taco sized flour tortillas leftover from El Pollo Loco...

and

1/2 tomato
about four leaves of bronze lettuce

Fried up the onions till they were soft
Heated up the beans in the oil and mixed in the onions.
Threw them in a bowl for dispensing

Tortilla assembly.

glop on about one and a half or two table spoons worth of bean mix
drop on a small hand full of cheese
Roll snug but dont squish the beans out the end
place overlap end face down in skillet of hot oil

Once its browned turn over...

Roll another set flip the next....
Set em on a plate to rest. Good semi warm. These are not burritos in the strictest sense more like rolled tacos. and ment to be eaten with your hands.

make three salads out of the veggies and spinkle with the rest of the cheese.
Grandma had one and a half tacos..... I had three and dean had three and a half...
we didnt have salsa and I didnt salt and pepper anything. Dean is still raving.

Thanks for the encouragement. I went online to check out cheap sources for yarn and found myself making my own yarn out of old tshirts. It won't work for the socks really but I can do a fun cardigan for my daughter with it and a grocery tote for my mom.

I use eggshells to make eggshell mosaics and I also crush them and add to the garden in fall when we turn the beds for winter.
