Just curious who else is living super frugal

I am watching lots of people put in their harvest and OMG  forty jars of this twenty jars of that chicken processing and jars of broth and on and on....  My head is a spinning.

What I want to do is a cold pack of some sort of vegetable...  Something easy and what I enjoy... like Asparagus...

Perchie.girl your canner should have come with an instruction booklet that tells u xactly how to set it up, how long to let steam vent after closing it up and how many minutes to process and what pressure to process at. You adjust the burner hotter or cooler to regulate the pressure. The main safety issue is don't open til your sure the pressure is 000.Read the book n follow it.
My wife n I used my grandmothers canner the 1st time n there is nothing like hearing that lid POP as the jar seals. We now have 2 going when we're canning a lot.
Green beans are in season now and very easy to cold pack. You can do pints if a qt jar is too much to eat at once.We have 88 qts put up so far and more to pick.

Its just me.... quart jars are what I am aiming for... Not feeding a whole family. Read the instructions and have a couple of books on times and pressure. The canner I have has no dial Just a couple of different weights.

My issue is I dont live at my house right now. i am caretaking for a very opinionated 99 year old Grandmother who thinks I bring too much "stuff" in her house. She grew up on the farm but shes a city girl.... So I wait. overwhelmed by how much work you all do for your families. And I can work through it all eventually.

99 yrs old Wow! That's good of you takin care of her.
If you're just feeding you then u probly want to put stuff up in pints. A qt feeds our family of five with leftovers 4 2maro.
The weights are ur "pressure guage" the base is 5lbs base n 1 ring 10lbs n the base with both rings=15lbs. All you need to start is the booklet that came with the canner. The one for my grandmother's canner has the same time n pressure as the new one we bought. It is so old the back page tells you to send coins thru the mail when ordering replacement parts. Lol

I agree listening to seals ding is a awesome exciting feeling!

Same here! That never gets old to me, no matter how many years we have canned. I've been on canning sessions that lasted well into midnight hours and then went to bed, only to be awakened later by that "POP!" of the seal of a Johnny come lately jar. That sound always makes me smile.

It's the sound of success!

Prepping is a good thing....  and exactly what its for...  being prepared for lean times.  I been stockpiling stuff when I see it on sale.  I bought my first pressure canner and need to learn how to use it.

Deb, I'm also new to a pressure canner.  Bought it last fall with the intent of canning my extra roos.  I think I'll give myself a breather, and do something super simple, like kidney beans first so I can see how it works.  Then, I'll move on to meat.  I'd love to have a nice big freezer.  We have an old 6 cu. ft. chest.  If I actually cleaned out all the old stuff, and stuff that we don't use, I'd probably have almost as much room as I think I need.  I made 9 pints of dilly beans today.  Other than the jars, the only cost was the vinegar, and the red pepper flakes, which I have on hand anyways.

Ball Blue Book of Canning.

Your pressure canner can also be used to water bath.

I really need to sign up online to get the electronic ads so I can know when produce goes on sale here. I'm not getting the paper anymore.....

I personally like pints- you can always open 2 at a time if you need to. Even with my family, a pint is just about right for soups and things.

People are often amazed at the canning stuff that can be found at garage sales for cheap. I've also gotten good deals at Big Lots, but that's totally hit or miss.

I really like canning other dry beans, too.
