Just curious who else is living super frugal

why do you have to go to a vet for rabies shot, you can buy it over the counter, at least here you can...

It depends on the regs in your state. here you can give a rabies shot yourself but you cannot get the tags for the dog unless the the vet does it. I know nothing about Coggins. My horse had her Coggins test before she was moved from Washington State to California... She has never left the state. Here coggins isnt required unless you cross the border either in or out of the state. The vector for transmission is biting flies.

Coggins I believe is a blood test. to test for Equine infectious Anemia. Which is a fatal diagnosis for horses. you have two options in California last time I read up on it... To Euthanize your horse or Quarantine them for ever... meaning they cannot leave your property... ever.

I hope that law has changed but the last time I read up on it was about thirty years ago. Because some horses develop titers which means they are immune yet they never had the disease. The test is for the Titer.... or antibodies in the horse

In Wisconsin you need to have vet certify for rabies vaccination, it is the law. It has to do with the paper trail and making sure animals are correctly inoculated. If the dog bites someone, they want to know for sure if it had its shots or not. Not sure about Missouri, but in WI, we do have rabies occurring in wild animals and they are trying to make sure to break the vector from wild animal to pet dog to human.

I see that Missouri is one of the states with no rabies vaccination law.

yeah missouri isn't the strictest state in most cases , its funny though we buy our rabies vaccines from a farm supply in Arkansas and they come with tags. i always did in missouri also, i just thought it was that way, weird to live in a stricter state

edited to say a farm supply store not tractor supply :p

I just looked it up.... Very interesting

Here is a PDF showing the individual states and their requirements...

https://www.avma.org/Advocacy/StateAndLocal/Documents/Rabies state law chart.pdf

There is a requirement that in Missouri it should be administered by a Licensed Vetrinarian... but there is no specific law found...

But looking down the list there are very few that don't specify that a veterinarian is required or at least someone with some technical training...

Interesting....

Here just about any other vaccine can be administered to horses and dogs and cats. Just following the recommendations on: Age, frequency, and need. If you are required to provide proof best to have a Vet do it and document it.

OH and I found the PDF Here:

In Massachusetts: Yes I can buy the vaccine BUT it is not recognized by the law unless a vet administers it and provides the paperwork. Stupid. Makes the vaccine far more expensive and the vets can chage what they want. I just ooked up the town rabies clinic for dogs and cats-- it is $15 per animal. THat is about the cost of a 10 dose bottle.

Many New England states cannot legally buy rabies vaccine.

Not here. I haven't seen and rabies otc for anything. Equine vets go to you.

And a negative Coggins is required if you want to ride anywhere- trail rides, state or national parks , etc. It's not just interstate travel. For that, they also need a health certificate.

Consider yourself lucky. I can't take an animal to the vet for ANYTHING and come out without dropping at least $50 on the counter. (and sometimes $100) But, there's a vet who comes to a local store (recently, it's TSC) and does immunization clinics. He does a basic "well pet" check up and charges about $16/shot. Crazy wait time, but, no way can I afford the typical vet service.

I have noticed that feed stores and supply stores have really limited their supplies on a lot of animal medicines. When I asked the local feed store owner for some corid, he told me the feds are cracking down because we (farmers) self treat and don't take the animals to a vet, they want to avoid any lawsuits. Anyone else heard this? He said they are trying to pass a law that you must have script for any animal meds. Our vets around here charge $100 visit charge minimum + whatever type of treatment, tests ran, what have you.
