Hopefully Im not being rude here, I would like to know why rabbits are not ok to eat? I understand about pork but never heard about dietary prohibitions for rabbits. Can you give me more details?
Thank you

I would love to learn to sew the feed bad totes. Endless uses with all the kids i am sure. I know I could do it. Well i think maybe I could. I am improving on my sewing. I do have a working machine now too. I just haven't gotten the nerve yet. My one regret. That i did not learn some of these skills when I was younger. Now I am just to afraid of wasting material or time and then failing.

You could also trade a couple of 80 to 100# hogs for front quarters of a deer. That part would be kosher right?

Well, kinda.

They'd have to come kill the hogs or rabbits because we wouldn't be able to (we can kill it to get rid of them, but we can't handle them/keep them long enough to do a trade as handling them is taboo as well). I'm sure once I broach the idea to my dad, he'll run with it. I know they had issues with rabbits last year, and the guy a few lots down mentioned seeing wild hogs, but he's well aware that most people don't follow the same laws he does and doesn't want it to go to waste. If he killed them, he'd have no choice but to get rid of the carcass as quickly as possible.

Leviticus 11 (the chapter is devoted to all kinds of dietary restrictions, but this one is specifically for land animals).

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

3 Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.

4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

5 And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

6 And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

7 And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.

8 Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.

Weird Ive read that before but somehow 5 and 6 never made it into my fuzzy brain. I know people think Im weird but I like reading Leviticus. I enjoy reading all the different "rules" for lack of a better term. Interesting stuff. Thanks for answering my question.

I personally chose not to convert to Judaism. Since my dad is a Jew but my mother is Catholic, we would either have to be adopted by my grandmother/other female or choose to convert. My grandmother died when I was 10, so none of us went that route. My oldest sister didn't convert, her twin/my middle sister did convert, and I did not. However, since I was raised the first 19 years of my life eating kosher, I am still unable to get past the "Ew BAD!" feeling toward eating pork, shellfish, skinfish (like catfish), rabbit, etc. I hate to tell people that for quite a few of us, even though we aren't Jewish, we just can't bring ourselves to eat it... it would have to be dire emergencies (Jews were told that if it comes down to starving to death or eating unclean animals, they were to eat the unclean and purify themselves later... which is how many women and children survived in concentration camps as German women would throw whatever leftover food they could spare over the fence to the Jewish women and children, and usually it was pork).

A friend of mine sent me this Apple Sweet Potato Soup recipe and it's GOOD. It's a bit of a fridge-buster for me, and makes for supercheap lunches, so I'm sharing it.

Apple Sweet Potato Soup

2 tablespoons of olive oil
3 stalks of celery, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
2-4 cloves of garlic minced
½ large onion, chopped
1 large carrot, peeled and chopped
6 cups of vegetable (or chicken) stock
4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
2 apples, peeled and chopped.

In large sauce pan sauté celery, pepper, onion and garlic in olive oil.

Add vegetable stock. Bring to boil.

Add apples and sweet potatoes.

Cook until apples and potatoes are soft. Using an immersion blender, blend until smooth.( I don't have an immersion blender, so I just blended it in batches in a blender, be careful because it's hot)

Add seasoning.

Salt and pepper to taste or cinnamon/ginger or curry. Or whatever you want.

Makes 7 two cup servings, supposed to freeze well (I ate some, and divvied up the rest and froze it).

That's such a shame really. I know what it's like though - when I was pregnant, the smell of any meat made me feel ill. All I could eat was calamari. And boy, did I eat a lot of it.

It went away afterwards, and now I love all those foods. Still can't get past escargot!

So far, the only pork product I've been able to bring myself to eat has been bacon... and that's because I had it in a BLT and liked it.

Still can't cook it myself though, the smell gets me. I can smell shellfish a mile off or so it seems and it always flips my stomach
