Just dispatched our first rooq

Sometimes the bantam roos are the most aggressive. They remind me of the little barking chihuahua nipping at your ankles. "Ankle Biters" we call them!

thank you all, the hardest part was seeing him so limp...not hearing him crow..its eerily quiet(which is silly with 7 kiddos around!!)

Littlestars, it sounds like you are kind of feeling the way I have felt every time we have had an animal euthanized. I go over every little detail in my mind, over and over. I think I will never be able to get it out of my head and I walk around with a sick feeling in my stomach. The whole world feels different. But be assured, it will become easier. You will be able to remember the good things about your rooster baby and will forget the pain you feel over the way it ended. Whew! Go get some big hugs from your two-legged babies, right now!

Thanks Homeycow : ) think I will go bring my babies some treats!! I do feel exactly like you described, I didnt see the actual "deed" as he was behind a little building ..thank heavens but keep going over it, He will always be remembered with love and hubby buried him near the coop

You did the right thing! And yes, its a normal feeling.

When you get baby chicks, do be mindful to not to baby them to be friendly, they are either aggressive when hormones come in or they can be as sweet as they can be. Its the luck of the draw. Any bird that comes after me (exceptions are a broody mom with chicks, that I can understand that perfectly and it is innate and within reason for her to protect her babies from anyone) WOULD be either rehomed or killed. If it is really rentless attacks, I will NOT pollute the gene pool with this aggressiveness, cull him for dinner or put to death and buried.

You did the right thing, just think what that roo could have done to your little children. Plus he was displaying some really violent behavior with that feather pulling. A rooster doesn't need to be that rough. I had to put a roo down about a month ago, well, hubby did it for me. This rooster had deformed feet, and he was a sweetie too, but we knew it was best. I also had that sickened feeling for a while....but it does pass.
