Just hatched 13 of 14 eggs. Transferred the chicks out to brooder.

The remaining egg had yolk all over it and it was stuck to the tray in the hatcher. I immediately thought BAD EGG and went for gear just in case of explosion.

i got the egg loose and there was in fact a deceased chick inside.... had a normal pip and everything.... and it appears to have just stopped and died. I am presuming the leaked yolk had something to do with it.

Could it have pipped in the wrong place causing the yolk to leak out prematurely and leading to its death? Could it have been the rampage of the other chicks running around after their hatch?

I just went to remove it from the bag for a photo, and already it smelled a little.... egg-y, so i abandoned handling it too much. Could it have had an infection of some kind?

Adding this to the 'I've never seen this before' category.

Thank you for any insights.

The chick could have either pipped the wrong way and caused the yolk to leak, drowning it.

It could've pipped prematurely.

Or it could have pipped correctly and chicks knocking it about could have caused a leaky yolk, drowning the chick.

When it comes to hatching eggs, there are so many things that can go wrong.
So i'm not too far off with my wonderings.' Thank you for your response.
