Sorry, little vent here.....
My eldest daughter has been afraid of chickens for years, and I could never figure out why. She's softening her opinion (a little) now that we have chickens, but she said something to me last night that finally revealed why she's so afraid.
I was in our run last night putting the food up since the girls were going to bed, and I picked up one of our friendlier brahmas. She asked me, "Aren't you afraid they're going to bite you?" I told her no, that I had been pecked hard enough to leave a nasty bruise, but that's all it was... So she told me that my ex-boyfriend who had chickens... that his mother told my daughter that when a chicken pecks, its so hard they can rip out your veins and you have to go to the hospital. She's been petrified since. Like nervous sweats and running in abject terror when we went over there.
WTF Was that?! I swear she did it just so she could watch my kid run away from her birds when they looked at her cross wise. (My daughter is the type that if something sounds scary enough she'll hold onto it, especially when she was younger, and take it completely to heart). I'm glad she's getting over it, and she told me that... but dang... why would you say something like that to a kid?!?!
