Well, so I've decided I'm not really ready to deal with this yet. I'm still pretty new at this, having just gotten day old chicks in the mail in February, so my hens are just starting to lay really. So I candled them all and couldn't see much except a definite air space in a couple with dark otherwise. So then I did the float test since I decided not to let her brood. One completely floated, so I think that one is rotten. I'd feel pretty terrible if it turns out to be a developing chick, but I don't think so. Five showed fresh (sunk level), and the rest sunk one end higher, so I'm hard boiling them. And I'm keeping all the chickens cooped up for the day so they've GOT to use the "proper" nest boxes. Maybe some day I'll let somebody go broody, but not yet. We also have three young grandchildren in our home, and I don't think they could resist letting the hen do her job without lots of "help".
