Hello! I've been looking at getting into the chicken world for a few months now. Just last weekend I took a leap and purchased a coop and assembled it. I'm not sure how long it's going to last being a prefab home, but hopefully it'll last for at least a year. Anywho, I'm totally excited to have my own little flock now!!

Unfortunately I can only have four hens due to the city ordinance (which I have a member to thank for getting changed in my small town). After doing some research on breeds, I would like to have some Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks. The only problem is I can't seem to find any chickens anywhere!! I know you can order from a select few places online, but I didn't like the idea of shipping my future feathered babies via USPS. When I purchased my chicken barn at a local farm equipment store, I was told they would have pullets next month but breeds would be subject to what their supplier sends. If I can't find any hens before then, I'll check it out.

Looking forward to getting advice and seeing how others are doing in their backyard chicken farm adventure!

Congrats on deciding to get chickens! To find chickens, you can check your local craigslist. Buff orpingtons and barred rocks are pretty common breeds, so you might get lucky. You can also ask in your local thread here on BYC. Someone might have what you're looking for or be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on getting your chicken adventures underway, I'm sure you are going to enjoy it very much. It's such a rewarding and fun hobby. I enjoy it very much. I have a prefab coop and I have found the best way to keep them tip top is a good lick of paint and preservative. Also I found I had to extra bolt on the pop hole just to be extra secure.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Good luck with this new adventure! Most cities only allow people to keep 4-5 hens so don't feel like it's just you. Be happy you can even own them!
