Just getting started

Hello @Wardfamily and welcome! :welcome

So good to see you are researching and preparing before introducing a flock. You won't find a better place than BackYard Chickens in my opinion! There are lots of helpful folks here willing to answer questions.

What are some of your goals for a future flock? Any breeds in mind?

Nice to meet you. Right now I am looking at coop options. I plan to let them free range, we have two acres, but I need a small sturdy coop that has a run. Coyotes are a real problem here do I need to keep them safe at night and when I am not home. I plan to let them free range only when I am home, which frankly is most of the time.

I highly suggest investing in a game camera to know your potential predators, and really reinforce your run. You'll see folks around BYC talking about having hotwire around their coops because even at night, naught little fox/weasels/coyotes and such like to lurk around. Do beware of predatory birds as well. As for coops, don't be scared to build your own! Look forward to hearing more about your building and seeing photos of your new birds when you get them!
