just getting started

Hi!
I live in Central Oregon, and would love to start raising some chickens. When would be the best time to buy chicks. There are some for sale on CraigsList. Help!

hello! how many chickens would you like to raise? becuase if you order from Murry McMurry you have to get 25 or more unless you get a small order special.
how big is your coop?
can you keep it warm this winter?
i had my chicks hatch today, so you can get/raise chickens year round.

Well do your research. Make sure your set up to take care of them. No long trips etc etc if your going on a long trip make sure you have someone to care for them. If your in town know your laws. Are you wanting birds that are going to be egg layers or dual purpose.

Might want to look into birds for your climate although if you can heat them in the winter you will have more options.


Lots to of fun and work at the same time but well worth it.

OK.. voice of reason.. do you have a place you can brood your wee baby chickies? Have you discussed this with your spouse/significant other? Are chickens allowed where you live? Are they sexed? If not, are you allowed to have roos? If not, what will you do with any that turn out to be hims? Are you aware of and prepared to take on the costs of setting up a secure coop and run, bedding, and feed? Are you aware that having chickens causes your brain to go to mush over the cuteness of them and you will soon need to get even MORE chickies...?

I was sure glad we got our chickens the latter part of June
here in NC. Even then, it was somewhat a challenge to keep
the babies warm at night. However, now with the heat index
of 102, it's a challenge to keep cool in the day hours. But they
are happy. Just glad we didn't get baby chicks in Jan. or Feb.
I would also suggest to have the coop, run and nesting boxes
ready.

No time like the present! But do some research first. i did a little and dove in and it is pretty fun, actually addicting, but one thing i wish i knew before hand was dont use chicken wire on the walls especially. And chicken math is real.you can find everything you need to know right here this is an awesome website
