Just Getting Started

We haven't even purchased the coop yet. We have plenty of space for chickens. Have been studying the different breeds and trying to decide which to choose from for our area...Indiana....seems like there are too many to choose from. Some advice on eating pans etc. and considering plastic dish pans for breeder boxes?? I know we can buy nesting boxes. Just trying to make the clean up easier. Any advice is welcome.

You might consider this for your nesting boxes...I did and they are great...and cheap, too!

Very nice video. The thing I don't like about plastic is it gets so hot in summer - of course metal boxes are much worse. I think a broody hen would just about collapse. Some people use those plastic milk crates that are open on the sides.

Thank you for the good idea. I plan on a shed for a coop and a large run with some free ranging in the yard. Will just need nesting boxes in the coop. The plastic crates that are more open might be better in our summer heat. I like your mule in the background. Probably great to keep the coyotes away.

Welcome to BYC! My stepdad made me some wooden nest boxes that are attached to the side of the coop so there's more space inside (the coop).
