So my wife and I bout 10 buff orpington chicks about 2 weeks ago. Within a week of me getting the out in the yard to run and stretch one of my neighbors reported me.(We were so annoyed) So in turn i went to my borough to read the ordinance. It didn't say we couldn't have them it just said that we could have them without a permit. So to nip it all in the butt we applied for the permit. The meeting was tonight, they were really cool about it. Their concerns were no roosters and no slaughtering. So we got the permit. We are stoked.

Did anyone else have to get a permit or fight with neighbors and borough councils and what not???

Central Pennsylvania. I have a small yard but i built a really nice chicken tractor. Our girls are in it now. They are having a little trouble with the ramp because the cross boards are a little far apart for them at the moment.

we live in a city area and we also have codes to abide by. we are required 175' from the nearest house but do not need a permit. unfortunately most people in our area do not have that big of a yard and would like to have chickens. i hope to one day go before the city and try to get that changed to 100'. congrats on being able to have your chickens and you will enjoy them for years to come.

We live in Columbia MO and it just passed that you can have 6 chickens all must be hens and some rules apply! Like your coop/run has to ben 25 feet from the proety line and all that! Luckly we have great neighbors and have had no problems yet!

Just curious- were the neighbors that filed the complaint at the hearing?

I live in MA and we don't need a permit (heck, there's no leash law in my town!). We have just over an acre. I've heard chickens in the neighborhood before. Very early in the am you can hear the rooster crow and I think that I hear geese, too. We have no problems with our neighbors, but don't plan on asking their permission for chickens. We have bees (or had, we lost them all to whatever bee sickness is killing bees in the US) and our neighbors were HORRIFIED. One asked if we kept them in a netted area!

Too funny. They all grew to love the bees and we are hoping the same for our chicks.

Yeah the two things then complained about were possible noise and smell.

My rebuttle was that they are all hens and generally they don't make any more noise than the wild birds outside or the 4 dogs my neighbor has. As for the smell I said they are just like any animal, if taken care of properly they won't smell. If I don't clean up my dog poop ever that would start to smell too.

This cracked me up!! I had old neighbors who had the noisiest dogs and NEVER cleaned up after themselves... it did get smelly... then they had the gall to complain about our dogs who rarely ever barked and that my siblings would leave their bicycles out!
I think they just didn't like us for some reason. ;D
Luckily, we now live a MUCH more friendly neighborhood where we are now allowed to own chickens! Huzzah!
