Just had our first loss...

Went out to smoke and was sitting next to the coop when I realized the girls were inside. Then I saw big mama laying down.. She wouldn't come to me and that's when I knew.

She was a Buff orp, and was about to start laying so we looked and didn't see anything. Her vent was clear but there's a lump on her underside. She didn't act sick, and was fine about an hour ago. No changes in poop or anything.

My question is what now? Do we bury her or try to find out if we can necropsy her?
Also, she was the leader so what happens now with the 2 girls?

I would try to get a necropsy done. If there is a lump on the bottom between the vent and legs I would guess she was an internal layer or had EYP.

Thanks. Dh and I think she was egg bound. We put her in the freezer and are going to call for a necropsy tomorrow
