Hello everyone. I am fairly new to chickens ( have had my flock of Disney princesses for about 11/2 years and added a prince ( rooster ) in the last 6 months. ) one of my hens recently decided to sit we decided to give babies a try. I only left a few eggs out on the nest and today our first ( and unfortunately only- the other eggs didn't make it for various reasons) baby hatched today. Since I have hens of several different breeds and probably some that are mixes, I am wondering if some of your experts may be able to help me figure out who the mom might be?
I have a rhode island red rooster. My hens include a golden laced wyanndonte, a rhode island red, a buff Orpington, one that looks very much like a silver laced wyanndonte but is very small, one that looks like it might be a Japanese bantam, a white chicken ( who is the one that sat on the nest) of unknown breed, another white one with chocolate chip sort of markings, and a black hen with barred markings...as you can see I am not sure of all of the breeds. Some of the hens I got from friends, others I got at a local poultry auction.
The baby is black with a white belly. Any way I can figure out already who the mom might be? Can I eliminate the light cooled hens because of the dark coloring of the baby? I am trying to learn more about chicken genetics and would also love to try to figure out what breed all of my hens are. I will try to include pictures as I know that will help.
Thanks for any thoughts. I am so excited to watch this baby grow!

for photos go to the tool bar in the top of the post area that you wriye in, on the second line theres a box with a little picture in it, beside the flim strip looking thing, thats the picture button

Thats what i was thinking, black sex link chick most likely. if it has a white dot on its head its a male, if it is mostly black its a female, if it is a black sex link.

Can you rule out the smaller birds based on the size of the egg it hatched from?

I agree, the most likely mom sounds like the barred bird, and from your description sounds like it very well could be a girl. Check out a hatchery site like McMurray, I think they have pictures of black star chicks and see if your baby matches.

Thanks all! I will post some pictures tomorrow. I will post some pics of all the hens too..hoping to get some really Id's on them!

Here is a picture of the chick

The one in the center is Jasmine, who I presume is a golden laced Wyandotte
Behind her is rapunzel, the white one. not sure what breed she is.
