Just hatched (quail). Is it broken?

This little one pipped last night and was stuck with its foot out for over 8 hours. It just broke free a few minutes ago, and is rolling around. Wings look uneven, it’s having more trouble trying to stand up than the other newborns did, and what is that on the butt? It’s bulgy and whitish (looks moldy!?!). Poor baby is screaming its head off.

Any advice on what I can do for this sweet (malfunctioning?) baby? 😭

Update: the little one’s hanging in there so far. Guess the white stuff on its butt was probably poo? Butt is still bulging big time. It’s standing up for the most part now, but tumbles every time it takes a few steps. It’s having a hard time keeping its head up. Any hope for it? Praying it’ll sleep and heal, whatever’s going on 🥺

I'd be most worried about the curled toes. If they aren't straightening out on their own, you can use painter's tape to gently straighten them out and keep them in position. If they're going to straighten, it will happen within 24 hours.

I believe what you're seeing on it's rear is unabsorbed yolk. That will also go away as it gets absorbed.

The one thing to keep in mind is that chicks that have trouble hatching often have trouble for reasons. If this one gets better within the next day or two, it has a decent chance, but it might just fail to thrive.
