Hatching
Howdy! My name is Samantha, but you can call me Sam.
I'm not exactly new to the site as I have been using it for the past six or so months to prepare for keeping chickens, but I did decide to go ahead and join today.
We don't have our chickens yet but should be getting them in July. Two Easter Eggers (can't resist pretty eggs), two Australorps (brown eggs are always a plus), two brown Leghorns (white is also nice), and my only splurge -- two Black Copper Marans (GOLDEN EGGS??? Well, close enough). I did quite a bit of research and chose these breeds of chickens for different reasons, mostly egg color and level of production, but I was also interested in the temperments of the different chickens and how I thought they would interact. I hope to be able to add a couple of Welsummers to our flock next year, and to be able to install a couple of beehives (was going to get bees this year but was unable to get the hive bodies in time thanks to various suppliers being backordered). I'm also looking to keep some bobwhite quail this year and maybe venture into keeping ducks next year. One step at a time!
We live in East Tennessee on what my dad refers to as a "micro-farm." We have hawks living in the trees around our property, so we intend to use chunnels (chicken tunnels) along the bottom of our fences so that the ladies can get out and "free range" during the day and so that we can hopefully keep the weeds and grass that grows up around them in check. Our big plan is to eventually have the chickens able to range around the perimeter of the garden to keep the weeds down there as well, but we'll have to see how safe and effective the chunnels are before we get to that point.
We are also sharing the farm with a dachshund named Kaiser who is no doubt our best farmhand -- er farmpaw -- and a couple of cows.
I look forward to getting to know the BYC community and sharing my adventure in keeping chickens!
